I know this is against the positive tone here but I've just seen a blackbird get snatched by a neighbour's cat. Fine by the owners presumably, who I'm sure would say they care about animals. Never understand this doublethink.

Eyal Weizman · All they will find is sand: Gaza’s Yellow Line Most of the Gaza Strip – cities, refugee camps, schools, universities, mosques, the health infrastructure, agriculture...

‘Reconstruction plans imposed on Palestinians with the implicit aim of destroying Palestinian life in Gaza demonstrate the reason Lemkin reserved a place for architecture in his conception of the crime of genocide.’

Glen Baxter has died. His drawings of cowboy art critics and wimples were an absurdist joy. RIP

Hi. Does your frustration stay, or do you tune in to the phonetic spelling and read comfortably after a while? I wonder if standard spelling means accents get suppressed.

Nigel Farage has called Welsh people “Foreign speakers” in a Cameo video.

I hate to break it to you Mr Farage, but if you read a history book you would realise English is more foreign in the UK than Welsh.

Big credit to the Guardian for breaking this story: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/ng-i...

I meant that journalists etc also get it wrong through not taking time to check - it is part of an undermining pattern and the response when it's flagged is often dismissive or hostile. Let's leave it there. Enjoy your Sunday.

Not all, because I also complimented your images, effort and enthusiasm. You gave a baseless insult in your first response and again later so go easy with the innocent tears. It might appear pedantic to you, but what I'm raising here is something that journalists, tourists, presenters do endlessly.

I thought you were ok with those two.

Or, we're here because you couldn't say yep, it would improve my audience's experience if I spent a few moments finding out the names of the places I visit, by asking someone there. Garbage person? Thought I'd been nice about the other aspects of your work. (Sorry, but it wasn't just Cennen).

I genuinely applaud your efforts and imperfection isn't the problem here. You keep demonstrating that you think the language of the places you visit has little significance, that moments spent checking pronunciation isn't worth your time and I must be a damned cheeky fellow for challenging you.

1 month ago 0 0 1 0

And you are conflating perfecting a language with checking how to say a handful of placenames before posting. So not infallibility, more courtesy. Can you explain why asking someone how to pronounce a word in another language isn't the obvious, natural thing to do, rather than making something up?

1 month ago 0 0 1 0

No, more that you seem to think the language of the place you go to is irrelevant. I was hoping for a more open response but you have shown that you get it wrong because you can't be bothered, which is a loss for you. Also, you know nothing about me but insult is easier than accepting criticism.

The images are great as is your enthusiasm. With all the effort that goes into creating your videos it's puzzling that you don't take much care with pronouncing place names. Carreg Sennen?

“They were careless people… - they smashed up things… then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made…”
Yes Mandelson. But don’t ignore what Farage et al did (and still do) to help them.

My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’

Upon Reflection

My oldest's wit is a razor wielded with neutral pronouns and shock dyed hair.
My son' s smile is a light, shining from kind eyes and a staggering empathy.
I have juggled morals, and trauma, and hard choices in hard places
To make it to them.

I would do it all again.
They have their own roads ahead
And I cringe at the climate for their journeys
I can't save them from it all
I can't take their heartaches
I can't make the world safe for them
As I would hope to
All I can do is try, fight for them, teach them to fight for themselves
And
Make sure the burning world stops at my front door.

Shabana Mahmood is an avatar of open Britain – that’s what makes her fable about immigration so seductive | Nesrine Malik ‘She is the daughter of immigrants,’ supporters of her cruel asylum policies say. ‘How can she be wrong?’ Let me put them straight, says Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik

"In her telling, racism and xenophobia seem not themselves objectively bad things that must be combatted, but a natural outcome that occurs when too many rights are given to immigrants and asylum seekers." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

We wake to mornings of cold magic. Exhale dragon-breath, crunch frost-frozen leaves as we walk. The year is dying. We feel it as rush of ghosts, a shivering that foretells the blade of ice upon its neck. No wonder this is the season where folklore burns bright. – #DAKilroy, 1982 #Folklore
