Definitely crossed my mind. I don’t like to assume women are always victims in cross-cultural affairs of the past, as that takes away the possibility that the women had agency and were making their own choices. A range of options seems possible.
I’m curious about the women from agricultural communities marrying into hunter/gatherer communities. I’d love to know whether there is archeological evidence of how these groups intersected - shared ritual sites, traded goods…?
Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.
