So true. I can’t think of anything I’ve written which hasn’t changed dramatically in the writing of it vs what I originally had in mind.

Memories are not retrieved as they were first laid down.

Over time they are increasingly levelled and sharpened to fit with our beliefs about how the world works, and with how we see ourselves.

Which is the root of self deception.

I’d have thought the replays should be used to disprove the 1st instinct - letting it carry the day only if no disconfirming evidence can be found.
