We had a great time at the Ohio Science Olympiad STEM Expo, giving middle and high school students a chance to learn about brain research!
Excited to share that our new paper is out! Holistic processing can emerge for non-face objects, with no expertise required. Configuration (both 1st and 2nd order) is all you need! For CNN and correlation with face recognition read the paper!
We also ask how these effects relate to face recognition ability and whether they extend to CNNs—spoiler alert, they do!
They did, but specifically for configural information, and not just for second-order configuration. First-order configuration showed the same pattern. This suggests that configuration itself may be what fundamentally drives holistic processing.
In this new paper, we used novel non-face stimuli and briefly trained participants to process either configural or featural information. We then tested whether classic signatures of holistic processing would emerge.

Happy to see this paper officially published in Cognitive Psychology! A nice collaboration with Yuxuan Zeng and David Osher at OSU. We find face-like holistic processing in non-face stimuli - and Configuration is the answer!

This suggests a universal principal of brain function: neural selectivity is generally governed by global patterns of connectivity.
These models all fit extremely well, demonstrating that, across the brain and across a multitude of mental functions, around 80% of the variance in neural responses can be explained by connectivity.
We designed models that combine the average functional connectivity pattern across 1,018 individuals from the Human Connectome Project, with meta-analytic maps of brain function from NeuroQuery, across 33 different cognitive domains.
We wanted to know whether brain connectivity and neural response patterns are broadly linked, at a bird’s eye view.
