RIP to the sports fans tormented by the gods for their hubris but I'm different. And better. Maybe even better than the gods

I've had a complicated few days, but they gave me a chance to launch my political mathy newsletter:

I have a script I'll be testing to scrape interesting/relevant things from the Federal Register to send out regular updates (with short commentary)
Which one of you got your congressperson to intercede? I need to give you and your representative a hug.
I was a Raptors fan when they got swept by the Wizards in 2015, and when they got exposed as frauds by the Cavs in 2017 and 2018. These playoffs can't hurt me
this is tracking towards slotting in as roughly the 11th-most upsetting raptors playoff loss to the cavs on my personal ladder of pain
Weird that they just decided to call it at halftime and not even play the second half, huh
Need the Scottie midrange and hooks to get heating up
I am delusionally high on the pairing. When Jakob was out in parts of the season, the Raps played CMB/Scottie frontcourts and it was incredible to watch. Defensive monsters, and CMB males a lot of good offensive decisions with positioning and stuff.
Maybe the league will learn who Scottie Barnes and CMB are in this series.
Very excited to hate their commercials soon because they're on all the time, get that money!
I like watching the first NBA playoff game and seeing commercials starting WNBA players. A'ja hosting a late night show to sell her shoes, Paige not buying a truck, commercials are dumb but at least they star cool athletes
Collin Murray-Boyles has never made a mistake, I don't know what you're talking about, he's perfect and beautiful and did I mention he's perfect
Has anyone checked on the "the real world doesn't have deadline extensions, so neither will my students" professors?
A million procrastinating faculty members all unclenched their jaws and felt their shoulders loosen at once.

Yup! I have some more typical in-class testing, but I use a standards-based system of grading. So students test and can re-test on specific topics for the main portion of their grade in the class.
I've been trying to get more and more of these reflective opportunities in front of my students, especially since reading @mathyawp.bsky.social's 7 Exam Questions for a Pandemic. I'm also curious to know what it could look like as a part of a recitation!
If you do try something like this, I'd love to read about any improvements or wrinkles you add. I know you're very thoughtful about how you handle stuff like this, so it'd be great to learn from your experience too!
Can't wait for Tempo players to discover Roll Up The Rim season
My end-of-year reflections on the homework policy I've been using. I've been brainstorming this with a bunch of you throughout the year, so thanks to everyone who helped me craft this version. Overall, it's been a pretty fulfilling year.

Enormous betrayal of the public trust, thinking about you in this trying time
Any time I remember something about me as a kid, it's like, uhhh, the signs were there from an early age lol
A poorly drawn circle with an arrow on the top pointing to the left and an arrow on the bottom pointing right, indicating that the circle is turning counter clockwise.
This unlocked a memory of me as a child. This saying didn't make sense to me because when you turn on a circular path, the "top" and "bottom" of the circle go in different directions. Nobody clarified which direction to look at.
So I used "on the clock" as my saying, since clockwise was to tighten.
Claude et al don't understand why your image is important for your students; these slot machines cannot write alt text that makes your figure accessible.
Tonight was my StS multiplayer night, and the update to doormaker caught us all off guard. We made it through but it took a lot more thinking than it should have!
Also I am unfortunately never going to shake that visual, thank you for that lol
My face when the devs push an update and suddenly doormaker is hard.
You have to draw a line. Every exception you make pushes the line farther and farther until there is no line. All uses of gen AI and ChatGPT are unethical. Period.
I have been talking a lot about accessibility in Math course materials, and the answer is NO you SHOULDN'T use ChatGPT to write image descriptions, I don't care if you think it's hard to write them.

I don't understand the value of asking a question without knowing what information you're hoping to learn from it. Part of why cliches are there is that they serve as good options for learning X or getting a response about Y.
A novel question is only interesting if there's a purpose behind it!
Me: Explain why, in this case, you can't use [Named Result]. What could you change about this problem in order to be able to use [Named Result]?
Student: here's how I can use [Named Result] on the problem that we can't use it on.
