... a quite nice condition 1957 original Jim Hall album (in Turlock, CA of all places). It was the lone jazz record there, stuck behind a Readers Digest boxed set, religious LPs and a Donny & Marie LP or three. I'll try to clean up and better repair the cover. But for less than $2, I'm content.

For me, Record Store Day is never just about special editions released that day, but also scouring for rarities in the racks of the stores. And sometimes along the way I'll poke into a thrift shop, which was where I found this quite nice condition 1957 original Jim Hall album (in Turlock, CA of all places). Everything the Ellison family could own if Paramount buys Warner Bros:

Paramount+
CBS
CNN
Showtime
HBO
Warner Bros
TNT
TBS
MTV
DC Studios
Nickelodeon
Comedy Central
Cartoon Network
And more...

This is a rotten deal that the Trump regime has rubber stamped.

State AGs must step in and block it.

With gas prices as high as they are I didn’t go too crazy rushing around to more shops. I’m sure there are plenty of other treasures to find as I make my way back to the Bay Area

Grabbed a bunch of other fun things I couldn’t leave behind for the price with some possible upgrade covers and such. Others I was just curious about. The Brigitte Bardot album is warped but, frankly, its about the cover.

Found a couple neat original Randy Weston LPs for 10 (one still in original shrink wrap) or less as well as the McDuff. The rest came from their cheepie bin ( 95c each) including the Johnny Ace containing a first press LP wed to a very clean 2nd press cover.

Along the way I hit some thrifts and scored a neat 1957 first press Jim Hall trio LP for less than 2. Another had a neat Booker T 8-track for 1.

The rest was from an off the beaten track shop in Turlock where we were staying, which had some deals.

They’d not even ordered the disc I wanted so I only took a Fall 12-inch EP from their used rack for 10 which seemed like a deal. Nice people, small growing shop, clearly loved by locals.
Rasputin’s Mad Monk fortunately had one last copy of the album I was seeking: XTC Live 1981. (yay!)

RSD 2026 In The Heartland - I found myself in California’s central valley for Record Store Day (RSD) this year.

Waited in line with 100+ fans in Modesto to see what Broken Records might have. They’d not even ordered the disc I wanted so I only took a Fall 12-inch EP from their used rack for 10 which seemed like a deal. Nice people, small growing shop, clearly loved by locals.

Scurried to Rasputin’s Mad Monk outpost there and was happy to find waiting for me among the last few items in their lonely RSD crate the album I was seeking: XTC Live 1981. (yay!)

Curious thrift shop find with ties to Dave Fleischer, co-owner of Fleischer Studios with his brother Max, creators of the Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons among many others. Does anybody have any clues into what this is about? I have not found any listing online so far.

Happy recent record swap score: a near mint white label promo of Thunderclap Newman (produced by Pete Townsend), sans cover for about a buc. I have a stock Monarch press US original (cover shown). I'll store this there. Maybe someday I'll find a cover w the promo sticker. Sounds fantastic.

Clarence Thomas ruled in favor of Citizens United.

Harlan Crow's political contributions then went up 862%.

Then we later find out Thomas let Crow take him on lavish trips, buy his mom's house, and help fund his wife's conservative nonprofit.

But go on about how "progressivism" is a problem...

Another end of day bargyn find at the swap meet. 1958 Pete Johnson comp (seemingly) of 1940s sides with great support. Despite the B&W cover and maroon label, this does not appear to be an 80s reissue, but a 1950s edition (heavier vinyl and "RVG" stamp in the deadwax!). Would love to find the color version of this oddly creepy horror cover which has nothing to do with the music. For a buc in perfect shape, I can't complain.

Happy to find another Hermeto Pascoal album (thanks Amoeba San Francisco!). This is from 2003, only issued in Brazil on CD. Chatting music at the KUSF record swap someone asked me what Hermeto's music is like. I said without a pause: Chick Corea meets Frank Zappa. The fellow's jaw dropped, he left excited to check out Hermeto's music.

Meditative sounds I needed to navigate this morning. First spin of a #RaviShankar LP scored at Sunday's record swap for $1 in mint condition. Not sure what is more surprising: that some sellers in this day/age don't appreciate this #music or how some buyers overlooked it. #musicsky #sitar

I now have almost all of Nektar's albums in UK or German pressings, several of which were never issued in the US. This will sit next to my autographed US and banded white label promo copies. Believe it or not, this album was a Top 20 hit in 1973.

Finally got my hands on an original German pressing of Nektar's breakthrough 4th album, Remember The Future. Never saw Euro pressings of this anywhere before, but an alert friend in LA spotted and scored it for me (very fairly priced at that compared to what they go for online!).

As a former US Capitol Police officer, I’m disgusted by this. As a current local detective, I’m disgusted by this. As a future criminal attorney, I’m disgusted by this.
As an American, I’m terrified by this.

More groovy early Getz for 10-inch Tuesday... on Teddy Reig’s early label Roost Records circa 1952... in remarkably good shape for its age... No seam splits on the equally groovy mid-century modern Burt Goldblatt designed cover. 4bux at Sunday’s swap meet.

Trumpet legend Howard McGhee nearly steals the show at points and Allan Reuss's guitar work is beautifully recorded for this time frame. For 4$ in great condition, I'm super happy to finally have a copy of this for the collection.

A warning tale which reminds me in some ways of Kurt Vonnegut’s completely different take on the concept from his 1952 debut “Player Piano.”

Both highly recommended if you’ve never read them… I need to read more Asimov…

In that story, the author looks into the future of what may happen to humanity and the universe as a result of a centralized super computing entity.

Such a brilliant mind to conceive this in 1956.

Haven’t posted about many of the #books I’ve read recently but this 1974 collection of #SciFi short stories connected by a theme of Space Opera felt compelling. Mostly works from the 1950s, the final tale “The Last Question” by Issac Asimov felt poignant in these young AI days. #goodreads

Brand New From '72 - Opened a sealed Don Patterson LP scored at Sunday's record swap at day end when the seller cut everything 50%. I have VG- condition mono original (blue label) but my curiosity was up as to whether this would be a reissue or not. Its not a super rare/collectible album so I figured I'd just enjoy the new pressing. I generally like the green Prestige label pressings. Sounds sweet.
