Together, these results suggest that pure awareness is a distinct neurophenomenological state and demonstrate the unique value of combining large and rigorously matched cohorts with time-resolved phenomenology and systematic neural screening.

Finally, TM showed little evidence of carry-over effects from meditation into subsequent rest, in contrast to controls, where counting induced residual changes

In contrast, when TM was compared with its own baseline, low-frequency functional connectivity dominated, while temporal entropy contributed minimally to classification.

In relation to ordinary cognition in control subjects performing mental counting, pure awareness is best characterized by increased temporal entropy and scale-free neural dynamics.

Using EEG and multivariate classification analyses, our large-scale screening of theoretically motivated EEG markers revealed a double dissociation in neural signatures.

Using a well-powered study (33 meditators and matched controls), meditators demonstrated greater intensity and variability of pure awareness compared to controls, independent of practice duration, consistent with the notion of automaticity in achieving pure awareness during TM.

'Pure awareness' designates a mode of experience in which self-identification with the body or ego is dissolved, temporal orientation is suspended, and spatial reference frames are absent, while a distinctive quality of wakeful, alert presence is nonetheless preserved.
