We all want a future that feels fair, secure & full of possibility.
But we’re living through unsettled times. Costs are rising & climate action is under pressure.
At NEF, we're working to tackle both.

Unemployment has dropped - but there are less vacancies for job hunters than ever. And wage growth has stalled.
@maxmosley.bsky.social breaks down today's labour market stats.

NEW: The government could guarantee affordable essential energy funded by energy company windfalls.
The illegal war on Iran means that energy giants' profits are set to soar - as are our energy bills at home. 1/4
A very happy 40th birthday to @clesthinkdo.bsky.social!
A great line up of speakers @mayorofgm.bsky.social @bevcraig.bsky.social @allymcgovern.bsky.social @sarahlonglands.bsky.social all pointing to the need to overturn 40 years of an economic ideology based on extraction.
Energy price shocks can and should be turning points in the way we run our economies. A compelling argument from my colleague @chaitanyakumar.bsky.social for using this crisis to protect the essentials that people need.

An excellent piece from @isabellamweber.bsky.social & @gregorsemieniuk.bsky.social arguing for a permanent excess profit tax on oil & gas, the revenues of which could be used to protect households from cost shocks and fund low-carbon energy transition

Answer: all those quotes are from Rachel Reeves.
Her pamphlet is well worth a read as it remains an incisive analysis of what's wrong with the way the economy works and some bold ideas - just as Zack Polanski presented today.

5.“We need a radical overhaul of the tax system because our current system of wealth taxation isn’t working.”
6.“Britain has ended up with an economy of wealth extraction rather than wealth creation.”
3.“The welfare state needs redesigning to help better develop people’s capabilities and enable them to build up their assets.”
4.“We believe that remaining in the EU represents Britain’s best chance for creating prosperity, protecting the environment & safeguarding workers’ rights.”
1.“Nature, knowledge, social relationships and vast swathes of our personal data have been captured by corporations and commodified.”
2.“Green politics should be rooted in a common appreciation of nature and the places we live, not centred around abstract targets and measures.”
As @guardianheather.bsky.social points out in her analysis of @zackpolanski.bsky.social speech today, Rachel Reeves launched her Everyday Economics pamphlet at NEF in 2018. Here's a quick quiz: whose speech contained each of the following?
www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
"Britain has gone from a place that makes things that people need to a place that makes money for people who own things."
It's great to have @zackpolanski.bsky.social set out his economic visjon as part of @neweconomics.bsky.social 40th anniversary events. More exciting events coming soon!
I see that lots of media outlets are focusing on the bit in Tim Davie's farewell speech today @rtsmedia.bsky.social about trust in the BBC being in "full on crisis" but I had some different take aways about the Beeb, the public realm and public service.

Another insightful observation from @deschuttero.bsky.social from the @theguardian.com
You know there is a problem when the UN Special Rapporteur on *Extreme Poverty* thinks Extreme Wealth is the real issue.
www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Very good to hear Rachel Reeves talking of rejecting the "failed economic dogmas of the past" and rallying against "trickle down & trickle out" in today's #SpringStatement.
Just not sure that the Government is doing enough to deliver the radical changes our economy needs.
I know there'll be lots of folk drawing lessons from the Gorton & Denton by-election. Here's my take for @opendemocracy.net on why we need bolder economic policies that offer real solutions to people's concerns & join the dots of an extractive economic system
www.opendemocracy.net/en/labour-gr...
Good news on the energy price cap. A 7% fall, driven largely by policy decisions and a bit by wholesale prices, is a relief for the govt. and hhlds. It won't stop the incessant attacks on net zero.
A few red/amber flags to watch out for. 👇👇
Does GDP tell the full story of thriving societies?
According to our chief executive, @dhnnjyn.bsky.social, there's more: We need an urgent reset of our economic fundamentals around growth, equity, and human flourishing.

"In many ways Europe has the most to lose from the change in the global economic order."
@dhnnjyn.bsky.social was on Al Jazeera to talk about what the future of the global order looks like
I enjoyed joining this @aljazeera.com discussion on the global economic order, esp debate on whether America is being unpredictable (8mins). There was a time when what was good for the world was seen as good for the US, but America First is good for neither.

"The idea that we pursue endless GDP growth on a fragile planet is impossible."
Our Chief Exec @dhnnjyn.bsky.social spoke at the 80th anniversary of the United Nations Economic and Social Council on why we need to challenge economic assumptions on growth and inequality.
My colleague @chaitanyakumar.bsky.social has a new substack on all things climate. This piece on the maths and models behind global warming is both terrifying and insightful. Have a read at open.substack.com/pub/chaitany...
A refreshing, unscripted speech by @albaerbock.bsky.social at #ECOSOC80 that, while it may feel like there is not much to celebrate in today's turbulent world, we should take time to mark the progress we have made and the institutions that made that progress possible
Call me naive & nostalgic but we need to include everyone in solving today's challenges, not through private meetings in ski resorts or pay-to-play boards. That's why we need to invest in & revitalise the United Nations. Tune in from 10am EST to watch as we mark #ECOSOC80

Tens of thousands of people in Kent and Sussex have repeatedly been left without water. Their water company is now under investigation.
Why are water companies failing us again and again? Because we privatised what is an essential public service. @dhnnjyn.bsky.social explains.

Why have so many incumbent world leaders lost elections in the last few years?
It's a symptom of our broken economic system, says @dhnnjyn.bsky.social on BBC World Service.
