A pilot just flew through one of the strongest aurora storms in years โ and saw the sky explode in color. From the cockpit of a Boeing 787, pilot Matt Melnyk had a view like no one else. Flying at 37,000 feet over Manitoba, he watched as the auroras filled the entire sky.

Vivid aurora borealis fills the entire sky over the Goldstream Valley near Fairbanks, Alaska on the night of March 20, 2026. Broad sweeping curtains of deep purple and magenta dominate the upper sky, with bright green aurora streaking upward through the center-right of the frame. Black spruce trees are silhouetted across the foreground against a snow-covered landscape. A faint moon is visible low on the horizon between the trees, with distant town lights glowing beneath it. Stars are visible throughout the sky between the aurora curtains.
Last night over the Goldstream Valley, Fairbanks. Not super bright, but one of the more colorful displays I've seen.
