First narrative page of Grammaton Punch. Main character Van Nguyen relates his origin in captions over 6 panels. Panel 1: Image of a solar eclipse from a city-scape. Van narrates "My name is Van Nguyen and I was born during a solar eclipse. That might sound cool but trust me, it's not." Panel 2: Van's mother walks with him in a park, pushing the infant Van in a stroller. Narration continues: "In fact, it's a huge pain in the ass." Panel 3: Close in on Van's mom. A shadowy, one-eyed figure looks over her shoulder while she remains oblivious. Narration continues: "Eclipse babies are born with something extra." Panel four: Close in on baby Van, eyes wide. Narration continues: "Me? I can see ghosts." Panel 5: Extreme close-up on the ghosts singular, large eye as it stares down at Van. Narration continues: "And that makes ghosts notice me." Panel 6: The ghost is bent down over the stroller, extending its index finger out to touch baby Van while he cries. Narration continues: "When I was little, this ghost lady would come around to feed off my energy."

Second page of Grammaton Punch, five panels. Panel 1: Van's mom stands in her kitchen, looking worried and holding baby Van while he cries. The cyclops ghost stands behind her, unnoticed, index finger on the baby's chest. Narration continues: "I was like an all-you-can-eat lifeforce buffet." Panel 2: Van is a small child now, laying in a hospital bed while his mother watches over him looking distressed. The ghost is still there in much the same position. Narration continues: "On account of that, I was always sick and going to the hospital." Panel 3: A group of doctors examines a wall of Van's X-Rays. Narration continues: "The doctors did every test in the book. They found something in my eyes." Panel four: Close-up on Van's X-Ray, showing a side view of his eyeball area. Narration continues: "Something they'd never seen before. Something they couldn't explain." Panel 5: The doctors are now speaking to Van's mother, who looks distraught. Narration continues: "My poor mom felt helpless. And she was. There was nothing she, or science, could do."

Third page of Grammaton Punch, 5 panels. Panel 1: View of Van's bedroom while he sleeps fitfully, the ghost lady standing over him. Narration continues: "For five years, the ghost lady kept me on the edge of death." Panel 2: Young Van rides a big-wheel tricycle down the sidewalk. The ghost lurks behind a tree in the background. Narration continues: "She'd back off so I could recharge, then come back for more." Panel 3: Van plays with a toy truck in the foreground while his mother stands in the doorway, hand to her mouth, looking aghast. Narration continues: "What was really messed up is that all this draining resulted in my hair turning white. Weird, I know..." Panel 4: Van plays with toy dinosaurs as the ghost drains him. He's sweating, eyes in shadow, looking annoying. Narration continues: "Somehow this ghost had the ability to touch me." Panel 5: Extreme close-up on Van. He's turning back, expression angry and eyes glowing. Narration continues: "But what I soon realized was--"

Couple recs: From the Dark - self contained woman vs vampire in Irish countryside. Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cure. Majestic Jhorror exaltation. Big influence on Ari Aster.

Looks gorgeous. Darko was a writing mentor to me via email in the late 90s and ended up helping me get my first gig in a Vertigo anthology. Very excited to read this.

Enjoyed the practical effects in Primate but wish they had devoted more time to the chimp in the first act. We get one little scene with him and its not enough for us to invest in what's happening. Could have planted clever set ups to pay off later. A shame.

Watching new Stranger Things and one of the kids says “you got this”. We did NOT say that in the 80s! Way lame Duffers..

Totally. Yoga has been such a big help as has developing a meditation practice.

What’s most absurd to me with Tilly is the work isn’t there yet people treat it with legitimacy. Where are the movies and tv shows? Where are the performances that shows these creations can compete with human acting? It doesn’t exist. It’s all hollow hype.

What sucks is that QT hasn’t done much work on himself despite the time that being successful has given him to potentially further develop as a human being.

Xmas came early in the form of a screening of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang at my local theatre. Hard to believe it’s been out 20 years. Black’s writing is dizzying. Feeling a fresh level of awe for the precision ridiculousness he pulls off on the page and screen.

Incredibly Powerful pose. Have done it for 12-15 minutes and that’s a real strain. Can’t imagine doing it for an hour.
