My lab's first paper is out! We tested the ability of Klebsiella bacteremia fitness factors to enhance resistance to oxidative, nitrosative, and intracellular stress. Bacteremia fitness is significantly linked to nitrosative and macrophage-mediated stress resistance.

Our latest collaboration with Karthik Hullahalli's team on bacterial barcoding is now out! We developed a way to measure dissemination dynamics that controls for independent colonization events. This more accurately assesses how bacteria spread between tissues.

I had two grant proposals up for review in the NIH Bacterial Virulence (BV) study section. It was canceled without notice this morning.
Without those grants, my lab must close within a year.
And so the purge of scientific research in the US continues

ASM did a spotlight article on me last February and it has also been taken down as β€œunder review”. Other spotlight articles are still up so not sure how else to interpret this besides the obvious. It feels pretty crappy to have been singled out and I won’t be engaging with them in the future.

Thank you to all collaborators for helping to sort through this huge set of data and to the barcoding community for your help in comparing our trends to other systems! This is truly a study were I made friends and collaborators along the way. ⭐

Klebsiella leaves the lung in two distinct patterns, termed "metastatic" and "direct", which are defined by the extent of clonal replication in primary tissues and predict bacterial burden across sites. Oxidative stress from the host and bacterial LPS influences these patterns.

I am excited to announce our latest publication! We teamed up with @khullahalli.bsky.social to barcode Klebsiella and ask basic questions about bacteremia pathogenesis: 1) how are bacteria shared between sites and 2) which host and bacterial factors influence dynamics?
