I am not brave enough to ride my bike on Rosecrans.

A massive goatsucker. Chuck-wild-widow over @riceuniversity.bsky.social today!
🚨🚨 That time of year again. Please check out the update to the City of San Diego bike map ⬇️
Please:
1. Add a thumbs up (agree) to the bike lanes on Pacific Highway
2. Add a thumbs down (disagree) to the sharrows on East Mission Bay drive and ask for protected bike lanes instead.
Thanks!
When resources are abundant, everyone gets along and shares.

Very convenient data, esp. if you otherwise have none. We tested the data extensively vs terrestrial water budgets and even against data from the @esaearth.esa.int CCI sea level budget. I might give it a try also as GRACE 'gap filler'
We deliberately showed up at 10:45 (30 bus + blue line), and we did see some people leaving the protest before the march began. The march itself did seem a bit smaller than the last two big ones. But still a very large crowd.
More info on #NoKings San Diego transit stats since I couldn't load this 300 page PDF on my phone yesterday.
The last two protests before yesterday had about 30,000 extra trips over an entire normal Saturday, all within a couple hours.
A rare 4-car train operating on the San Diego MTS Green Line to handle post- #NoKings crowds. Four-car consists are typically reserved for major sports events. According to MTS Board meeting presentations, they carried an extra 30,000 passengers (15,000 round trips) during the last No Kings protest.
Literally just got off that ship a few hours ago (Nieuw Amsterdam). Here’s a pic from the crow’s nest:
Made this last night - park & ride transit options for San Diego County No Kings rallies tomorrow. Included locations that are transit-accessible and not already in just a big parking lot. It's somehow less painful to look at on mobile than desktop. alex-wenzel.github.io/transit-maps...
As usual, @douglasporter.bsky.social is the best source on No Kings march/rally details. See y’all downtown!

Thank you for posting this.
Promachus hinei, a robber fly. These are indeed flies, but they are quite the predator. I have seen them take down dragonflies much larger than itself. But besides what they do, they are just beautiful creatures.

Rufous-tailed jacamar from Honduras. They are in the Piciformes order, which contains puffbirds, woodpeckers, and toucans. They feed on insects by catching them in flight from exposed perched.
Super high tide in La Jolla.
A red-throated loon and a western grebe turned up in Galveston, Texas. Both very rare birds this far east, but somehow they were together for a brief moment in time.

It is another thing that many parts of Europe get right. It is actually pleasant to walk or bike to where you need to go!

Construction fencing is gone at VA. There are still barriers so I guess the area isn’t open yet, but hopefully it’ll be possible to walk directly between the hospital, UCSD, and the Trolley station soon.
Red-legged Honeycreepers. Honduras. They are a type of tanager. They feed on flowers and fruits, and like hummingbirds, they have a long tongue for probing into flowers. The vivid blue color is not from pigments but is a structural color, where nanostructures in the feathers scatter blue light.
@edyong209.bsky.social and I just had an amazing view of Buff-breasted Flycatchers and a Guatemalan Northern Pygmy Owl in the mountains of Honduras.
Stellar’s Jay from the mountains of Honduras. These look and sound different from those in North America. Seems like every mountain range has its own variant of Stellar’s Jay.
Ocean Beach Pier stretches diagonally across the frame at sunset, its dark silhouette supported by evenly spaced pylons above rolling waves. The sky glows with a band of orange and red along the horizon that fades into deep blue overhead, with long streaks of cloud spreading across the scene. Wet sand in the foreground reflects the fiery colors of the sunset and the shadowed shape of the pier, creating a mirror-like strip of warm light against the darker water.
