To some degree this is also true of fine art painting as well, but we take those historical developments for granted because it happened many years ago. Art of any kind should be appraised within its context, and what the existing norms were in its day.

I keep seeing artists claim "Glitch" as a genre or medium, but it feels like a theme park now. It was never MY thing (although I get associated with it), but at least I could appreciate the intention behind the artists working in that vein.
