We have quite some expectations on COP30, and we have described them in detail in this rather long paper: www.germanwatch.org/en/93283?mtm...
We expect a lot from COP30, not least a collective response to the lack of ambition in the new NDCs. Details about what this could look like, as well as most other aspects of the COP, are now available in our new paper (English translation to follow): www.germanwatch.org/de/93283
The UNFCCC synthesis report about the NDCs 3.0 is out: The new climate plans are significantly better than previous plans. But, emissions of greenhouse gases are not cut fast enough.
At #COP30, it is essential to find ways of facilitating & supporting bigger emission reductions in the coming years

🚨 EU’s 2040 climate target? Still not enough.
@germanwatch.bsky.social: allowing CO₂ certificates weakens the real ambition.

#SB62
It would be a mistake for the European Commission to follow French President Emmanuel Macron’s advice and slam the brakes on its proposals for 2040 climate targets, the Commission's Executive Vice-President @teresaribera.ec.europa.eu said this morning: www.euronews.com/my-europe/20...
"A clear, legally binding 2040 target from the EU, gives cities and investors the certainty they need," says @mathiasdeclercq.bsky.social
@teresaribera.ec.europa.eu, @wopkehoekstra.ec.europa.eu, Mayors count on your leadership to ensure that Europe stays on track for climate neutrality by 2050.
🌍 1.5°C to Stay Alive – Why this limit still matters. Happy to share our latest paper that lays out why the 1.5°C limit is not just symbolic – it’s vital for global stability, human rights, and ecosystem survival. So far in German, translation will follow: www.germanwatch.org/de/93174
Relevant for more countries than Canada, not least certain oil and gas producers among the Gulf Countries
Debates on the EU 2040 #climate target are picking up (again) and the position of the new German was a main driver for that.
It is a good sign that #Germany is once again taking an early and clear position on climate in Brussel!

Interesting opening speech by Alaa Murabit at the Global Solutions Summit #GSS2025, about how trust in government can be restored
Small update from German politics: International climate policy including UNFCCC will be moved from the foreign office back to the environment ministry in the new government. Meaning it will be under social democrats rather than conservatives, and a possibly more interested minister - more on Monday

Comment: Trump’s tariff tantrum won’t stop the global energy transition
The US’s share of the global cleantech trade is too marginal to dictate its terms – but the trade tariffs will harm American workers and developing countries

Really impressive work behind - and in - the report, will use it as inspiration for own work!
The European Commission is expected to propose an emissions reduction target for 2040 in the first quarter of 2025.
Environment ministers, who traditionally negotiate the target, will meet on 27 March. The Commission may want to propose the target before this.

Today is the official deadline for #NDCs. More than half of all countries - including India, China and the EU - will not meet the deadline. However, it is certainly better to get ambitious climate targets a few months later than less ambition on time. More info here: www.linkedin.com/posts/petter...
Next Monday is the deadline for countries to submit their new NDCs. Some have already submitted, but many will follow later. For those, we have recommendations in our paper "Life after the Global Stocktake - Six Steps from Diagnosis to Third Generation NDCs": www.germanwatch.org/en/91893?mtm...
Germany's largest political party, the conservative CDU, just opened the door to the extreme right (AfD) to get a motion through parliament. This was a door repeatedly stated to be very firmly shut, but has now been opened by Friedrich Merz, Chancellor candidate. www.dw.com/en/afd-firew...

"In 2023, the world generated 57.1 billion tons of greenhouse gases, leading to a CO2 surface concentration of 420 ppm. The last time Earth’s CO2 concentration was so high was 14 million years ago." - just look at that last sentence again. Full text here: www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/c...
