If the point of the image is to showcase their personality through expression of environment then not only is that different from the examples I gave – but turning the negative space into background art means it's no longer negative space.

I am not talking about full body vs close up – I am specifically talking about hurting your composition with too much negative space. You can make a fullbody image while also not hurting it with too much negative space.
