The DNA Archive Built to Identify the Border’s Missing Has Vanished The Colibrí Center for Human Rights was a vital link between families and their missing loved ones. But now it's gone dark.

www.theborderchronicle.com/the-dna-arch...

Sharing this newly published investigation, coreported by me and a colleague. The DNA database crucial in migrant identification in the borderlands for years has itself gone missing. Co-published by @theborderchronicle.bsky.social and @highcountrynews.org

Stray Cops 'Wandering officers,' forced out only to be rehired elsewhere have a high rate of further misconduct. Current NC policies don't track or prevent this.

Great new series on wandering cops in NC from @lucasthomae.bsky.social. As he reports, officials there are failing to track why officers are leaving their agencies, a crucial data point in preventing wandering cops.

The data that exists is available on the National Police Index, national.cpdp.co.

I would say that absolutely none of these agencies are effective at preventing police misconduct - I’m only evaluating the ability for us to fully tell that story

1 month ago 1 0 1 0

agreed! we get far more data than Texas provides from many other states for our National Police Index project, which collects data from all TCOLE equivalent agencies.

but there are some states that refuse to even give us a list of who officers are and where they work, like Oklahoma.

1 month ago 0 0 1 0

absolutely - but in Oklahoma we can’t even get data showing that movement (the bare minimum that Texas provides). not saying they’re doing anything about it, but the data is more accessible.

Great reporting from @readfrontier.bsky.social about the state law blocking access to basic police employment history data in Oklahoma.

It's one of just a handful of states where @invisible.institute hasn't been able to access data for the National Police Index.

Excited to talk about using @invisible.institute’s National Police Index tool and accessing police misconduct and employment history data in the Pacific Northwest with my colleague Maheen Khan and @wilsonc.bsky.social of @investigatewest.bsky.social later today. Registrations are still open:

Embattled Pinal County prosecutor’s top investigator is disgraced cop Pinal County Attorney Brad Miller hired Richard Mueller to lead his investigators -- despite Mueller's long rap sheet.

Brad Miller, the embattled Pinal County attorney who lied about using Signal, sure knows how to pick 'em.

As @stephenlemons.bsky.social lays out, Miller's hand-picked top investigator, Richard Mueller, is a disgraced cop with a long history of misconduct.

Idaho won’t let public see if a cop was fired or resigned State agencies will no longer release information about whether an officer retired, resigned or was fired

Our reporting on Idaho prisons used public records to identify dozens of guards who resigned after misconduct — and it was met by calls for transparency from the governor.

Instead, the state decided those records are no longer public. W/@invisible.institute: www.investigatewest.org/idaho-record...

In Missouri, there is no state law that automatically revokes a convicted police officer’s license.

That must change.

Social card with text: Wondering how to effectively track police misconduct? Start here.

The need for law enforcement transparency & accountability has never been clearer – especially as ICE wreaks havoc on communities.

But police misconduct has always been hard to track, penalize, and prevent.

These resources aim to change that 🧵

Fascinating to see former Utah police chief Ken Wallentine cited here as a use of force “consultant” voicing concerns about ICE tactics.

Wallentine spent years writing policies that protect cops who use force for Lexipol, and nearly all of his “consulting” in lawsuits has been on behalf of police.
