However, if they let devs make apps for this, I think the more specific use cases that 3rd party devs can address could make this a new type of "daily carry" device that could replace smart watches.
My gut says that lots of people will buy this device because its a neat way to live in the future for a bit, but that it won't really retain users and they will go back to using their phone, wireless earbuds, and smart watch.
The live translation/subtitle features are highly useful in specific situations when you're traveling, but your phone can also do that.
In the US this isn't how a lot of people communicate so I think it will let them down. Internationally this might fit well into how people already communicate day to day where Whatsapp is popular.
The apps you can interact with on it are limited, and we didn't hear anything about a timeline for when devs would be able to put their own views on the Display's display. You can't place phone calls from it via your phone (as far as I know), only Whatsapp calls.
For a 15 min demo this is fine, but I think this will get pretty tiresome though the course of the day as it chafes. You can't really interact with the UI without it.
However, while the EMG wristband is really cool, you have to wear it very tight on your wrist in a specific orientation for it to work properly.
Sound was just ok. Lots of sound bleed others would hear at higher volumes. Bass was very thin.
Comfort of the glasses is better than any similar AR device I have ever tried. I can easily see myself wearing these all day without it bothering me.
The user interface has some brilliant gestures, but also pretty unintuitive navigation. The "imaginary pen" text input is great as is the "imaginary knob" adjustment for volume and camera zoom.
Meta Ray Ban Display from a professional VR Developer's perspective:
@scottstein.bsky.social was great meeting you today at Connect.
Test footage from an in-app camera system we’ve been working on.
I can’t wait to say more soon. It’s going to enable so much for our users.
Valve seriously needs to pay attention to what’s going on with XREAL.
From what I can tell, the single highest retention cohort of XREAL users are using them with Steam Deck or other handheld gaming pc.
I suspect higher retention compared to average Steam Deck users too.
I’m envious
Big things coming to Fluid this week!
I kid you not, @itch.io has been taken down by Funko of "Funko Pop" because they use some trash "AI Powered" Brand Protection Software called Brand Shield that created some bogus Phishing report to our registrar, iwantmyname, who ignored our response and just disabled the domain
VR sames with 500k MAU that are properly monetized with IAP on Quest are doing $15M+/year.
@starcenturion.bsky.social are you interested in chatting? I’m looking for some help on our marketing/community side.
Color themes are coming, but may be a IAP.
You can already tilt windows! :)
With controllers, when moving a window click the thimbstick. If using mouse, hold shift.
If you send me an unsolicited Calendar invite for a sales call, you better believe I’m:
- declining
- blocking you at the domain level,
- and making a blood pact with a demon to make your life miserable for the next 20 years.
Just gotta let the first thought flow
I think this is the #1 piece of advice that all early stage founders need.
Reason 35 that it sucks to be a Quest dev:
It’s super easy for users to pirate games and Meta doesn’t seem to care.
A large number of your sales will disappear because of this.
I wonder what they spent for the rights to The Office name and likeness…
Hey everyone, good to see you here. I’m the founder of Fluid, the top productivity app on Meta Quest.
Based in SF and host of local VR dev meetups and dinners.
You in the Bay Area?
Your team did excellent work on this. It’s the first thing I tell people who are demoing my Vision Pro to try.
