Nothing has killed more soldiers in the history of humanity than disease. While worst is a more complicated question Hegseth is absolutely the dumbest secretary of defense the United States has ever had. bsky.app/profile/ones...

New research finds: "For every point higher adolescents rated the representation of people of color, women, or LGBTQ+ people in a franchise, the franchise made $175.5 million more at the box office." www.scholarsandstorytellers.com Imagine applying this finding to books & political candidates! 📚 🍎
Today in social justice toolkit:
A dilemma action is a strategic action that forces your opponent into a lose-lose situation.
You've given them only bad options.
I give some examples
& then we talk about how to design them.
This one's pretty important.
Read and share, please?
One more example of why news ratings sites that indicate left/right political slants aren't helpful. NYT, CNN, and even AP are typically rated as left-leaning, but even they are covering for Kushner... 🍎 #MediaLiteracy #NewsLiteracy #SchoolLibrarians 📚
Important story from the Times on the rise of AI influencers for Trump www.nytimes.com/2026/04/17/b...
Posted here too. It's unlocked. Send it to those recalcitrant people who can't be bothered to, idk, make more money on another platform not lousy with Nazis and sex traffickers. www.patreon.com/posts/155635...
For #MediaLiteracy educators, this is the new DMHO.org scare or the campaign to save the Northwest Tree Octopus, except those were intentionally created teaching tools and this polluted info is embedded in supposedly trustworthy AI medical apps and could negatively affect users' health. 🍎 #TLSky 🧪📚
If you're a journalist who is still on substack, it is NOT ok.
Making tenure count, for MSNOW I wrote about my employer, The University of Iowa, creating a center for intellectual freedom. It's a reactionary project built on decades of conservative propaganda about higher ed.
I'm one of those trans women. I worked ground ops for Artemis I.
I am torn between celebrating the success of my friends and peers and grieving how my dream of working for NASA was shattered by hateful assholes in Tallahassee
For all the media/information/digital literacy educators out there, a new (fun) discussion prompt. Thanks @brianbilston.bsky.social! #EduSky #Skybrarians #TLSky #AcademicSky
Not once in this story does @politico.com mention that US factories employ ~89,000 fewer employees than a year ago.

Don't let this one pass by. While we're distracted with the war and Epstein and attacks on the Pope, Trump is irreparably destroying forests on public land, their potential to help deal with the climate crisis, and a century of science. 🧪 🍎 🌳

One of my elementary school media literacy lessons (www.projectlooksharp.org/?action=act) teaches students to look for context by asking: Is 7 is a lot or a little? I think even 2nd graders would understand that in the context of law profs, 7 is not a lot.
Boston Globe mock front page from April 9, 2016. Date says April 9, 2017, with giant headline “DEPORTATIONS TO BEGIN” and “Markets sink as trade war looms.”
Ten years ago today, in April 2016, the Boston Globe printed a satirical front page imagining a future Trump administration. The page was called "alarmist," "hyperbolic," "dystopian." But we’ve put up with so much since then it now looks like . . . a slow Thursday?
Yet another ex. of why we can't just teach students to use ratings shortcuts to approach certain news orgs as "safe," i.e., no need to ask questions. Some NYT reporters are reliable & credible, but the paper also consistently gets things outrageously wrong. Teach media lit analysis habits instead.
By using GenAI: I accept the models were trained on stolen data. I accept that the data was labeled by exploited workers. I accept the environmental costs of the data centers running these models. I accept that I am outsourcing some of my skills to a company. I accept these companies don’t have a viable business model. I accept that I am granting more power to big tech and their vision for the world. I accept that I am granting more power to the United States. I accept that all this effort could have been spent elsewhere. If any of these facts are new to you, you haven’t been doing your due diligence.

TODAY: Iranians are forming human chains around civilian infrastructure (bridges, power plants) as Trump threatens to kill them all
REALLY useful database for everyone who teaches media/digital/information literacy! Thank you @henkvaness.bsky.social. 🍎#TLSky #EduSky #Skybrarians #AcademicSky

Anti-trans hatred is the very lifeblood of 21st century fascism and we need everyone to wake up to this simple truth before it's too late.
It would also be nice if at least a few journalist recalled this pre-pandemic conversation about who is pushing the current space colonizing agenda (and why): www.cnbc.com/2018/07/11/s...
POTUS Proposes Elimination of Federal Library Funding. The President again requested that Congress eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) program. We've seen this before, and we're not going away. Fund Libraries, ALA 150, American Library Association.
"We are not surprised that the White House FY27 budget zeroes out funding for IMLS and IAL. The president’s intentions for IMLS were clear last year with the executive order to dismantle IMLS and cut off its funding [...] ALA members have a solid track record of defeating the president’s threats, but we do not underestimate the lengths to which he will go to undercut support for America’s libraries. ALA is working to make sure decisionmakers continue to hear from library advocates.” - ALA President Sam Helmick
NEW: The President once again called to eliminate federal library funding in his federal budget proposal. We have been here before. And when we make our voices heard, we can overcome this again.
Tell your Senators to reject the cuts & #FundLibraries in next year's federal budget: ala.org/showup
And they wonder why I'm uncomfortable with the notion of putting AI in charge of essential government, infrastructure, or education functions...

Part of me wants to applaud everyone who has been using Quizlet (Quizlet!) to protect their communities fr ICE. The other part of me wonders if ppl simply don't understand that apps like Quizlet are gathering data fr users and are not really private? 🍎 www.wired.com/story/cbp-fa...
Just a few friendly civics reminders:
1. The nation can't be a democracy and a theocracy at the same time.
2. There are exactly zero parts of christian nationalism that are patriotic.
3. Would someone please tell Hegseth that the U.S. does not do holy wars, Inquisitions, or Crusades?
Anyone know of a journalist or org keeping a running tally of taxpayer dollars that the corrupt Trump admin is stealing? Costs to pursue bogus lawsuits (e.g. against Powell), Noem's ridiculous ads, renaming buildings, etc.? If so, what's the current total? open.substack.com/pub/aaronrup...
The U.S. just made it legal to torture people 👇
But go ahead and tell me how much MAGA values life.
This is not what democracy looks like
The universe is a glorious, stunningly beautiful place, and it’s offensive & gross when people produce or share fake space imagery.
There’s a video floating around on here pretending to be the night sky viewed from Mars. It’s extremely fake, has been polluting the internet for years. Don’t share it
