Were We All Brainwashed Into Loving Geese? (Or: What Marketing Can and Can't Do) Plus: Thoughts on Our New Band Believe, The Delines, and Chicago taper Aadam Jacobs

I've been frustrated by the lack of nuance around the Geese/Chaotic Good story since @wired.com blew it up. So, I found this take from @stevenhyden.bsky.social balanced and refreshing: stevenhyden.substack.com/p/were-we-al...

Catalog Club: Al Green's "The Belle Album" (1977) It's one of Lou Reed's top 10 favorite albums of all-time β€” which makes a lot of sense

On the latest Catalog Club I talk about one of Lou Reed's favorite albums of all time, and why Al Green self-identified as a rock 'n' roll star. (Also: The so-called "grits" incident.)

Hey, I wrote a big essay about a quirky band I just heard on TikTok called Geese! Other topics: marketers marketing marketers, constructed "relevance" vs. personal taste, REO Speedwagon vs. The Clash and whether shady PR in service of great music is justifiable tinyurl.com/3b8ruv8b

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Melancholy Himbos Reviews of the Chi Peps Netflix doc and Flea's solo album. Plus: New music from Wendy Eisenberg and Bruce Hornsby

Hey, I wrote about the recent Netflix doc about the Red Hot Chili Peppers' early years and Flea's solo album HONORA, with tangents on John Frusciante's solo output and my ambivalent feelings about this absurd (absurdly successful) band.

Not sure if this was a common experience watching the Chili Peppers doc, but Flea gets choked up at least three times and it choked me up each time. Seeing Flea cry is an emotional experience, no matter what he's talking about.

My new favourite quote:

"Watching Flea cry is like watching your grandpa cry, if your grandpa was also known for expertly playing the bass while wearing a sock on his penis."

Bruce Springsteen, My Hometown, My Son & Me Also: My interview with heartland rocker Brian Dunne and new music from Sluice

A good read on Good Friday: I wrote a big essay about seeing Bruce Springsteen in concert with my son this week, in my adopted hometown of Minneapolis, and the return of feeling something in a soul-deadening time.

Everyone needs to go listen to Clams Casino right now! My top listen of 2025. It has echoes of Springsteen, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, but also Cold Roses-era Ryan Adams (sorry, ugh). It scratches the part of my brain that still wants hooks and not tiktok-ready audios laced together into a song.

Brian Dunne Is A Working-Class Indie Rock Hero An interview with the rising singer-songwriter about his band Fantastic Cat’s great new album.

I interviewed Brian Dunne, who made one of my favorite albums of 2025 and will soon release one of my favorite albums of 2026 with his band Fantastic Cat. I remember we talked a lot about our fave HUMAN TOUCH deep cuts, among other things.
