Note to my fellow Dems: The 2026 and 2028 elections will be "change" elections. But mere promises to change or talking points about change won't do the trick. Candidates need to embody change. They need to be the change we want to see. It's not about a position. It's about who they are.
Parliamentary systems make it easier to do things but also make it easier to remove bad actors or offensive governments when they do crazy shit.
In the us it seems that we’ve chosen to make it impossible to remove a bad government and in exchange make it impossible to do anything so no one can do too many distasteful things (or so we thought).
Because the democratic imprimatur of being elected is too great. Republicans feel like they’d be spitting in the face of their voters to remove him. The presidency was a bad idea for this reason. Prime ministers can be replaced much more easily and with less discontinuity.
The Democrats sense that they're gonna cruise to midterm victory by doing nothing and offering nothing and are using it as a freebie to punch left to make sure the voters don't get any ideas.

My mom still lives in a place without an overlay code though and 7 digit dialing still works there
They stopped doing this in the 2000s sometime. Now the whole city has an overlay code of 872. Since there can be 2 instances of every 7 digit number in the geography of 773 and 312, they require 10 digit dialing to require the caller to specify the one they want
In the old days when they added area codes they’d actually subdivide existing ones. Chicagoland used to be 312 and then in the 80s or something the suburbs became 708 and the city stayed 312. Then later the neighborhoods became 773 and 312 was just downtown.
I think if you live in a place that doesn’t yet have an overlay area code you can still do this. Once you get an overlay no more.

The Vermont thread that is linked seems to make the same double counting mistake, count the tax hike but do not subtract the premiums no longer paid to get the 11% number which is infuriating because this is the entire cause for this thread. Beginning to suspect bad faith actors here
If you look at the linked thing on Vermont it looks to me that the tax hike math did not in fact subtract premiums paid? So this thing makes the same mistake I’m yelling about? Can we confirm that?
Actually what am I saying. I read this thing again and it makes the SAME MISTAKE! It COUNTS TAX INCREASES but does not subtract PREMIUM PAYMENTS from that figure! Holy fuck.
There is also an adverse selection issue at the state level that doesn’t apply nationally. If Vermont has single payer, all the cancer patients from New England will move there and all the rich people will “move” to New Hampshire.

Now you can’t really do all payer rate setting at the state level for the same reason you can’t do huge tax hikes at the state level, people will leave the state. But you can do all payer rate setting at the federal level because it doesn’t have a common labor market with larger economies next door
One of the things noted in your Reddit post was that this entailed an attempt to make care more generous without doing things like all payer rate setting. If you decide to spend more money and don’t hold down costs then yes you will need more money. But you don’t have to do it that way.
