I love all these ideas! One thing I've started doing since the initial article is adding more guided lectures with prompts, pre-emptively addressing student concerns (economic, enviro, etc costs), and having them use AI in inefficient ways so they come into the convo with skepticism I can build on

In the new issue of Change Higher, @akezar.bsky.social breaks it down and posits campus leaders must have hope, instead of pessimism and cynicism. Read her provocation and much more from our insightful authors: shorturl.at/V7ylV

Strengthening ChatGPT’s responses in sensitive conversations We worked with more than 170 mental health experts to help ChatGPT more reliably recognize signs of distress, respond with care, and guide people toward real-world support–reducing responses that fall...

OpenAI put out a press release today addressing mental health concerns. I have many issues with it, but something super troubling:

They estimate a WEEKLY prevalence of 560,000 users displaying signs of psychosis or mania and 1.2 MILLION users indicating suicidal plan/intent.

A screenshot from an academic paper about the impact of AI hype that is highlighted. It reads:

We see this dynamic at play in OpenAI's shifting stance and policies as they have become more closely tied to Microsoft, a choice they made admittedly to access scarce computational resources. This is illustrated by the 2024 change to their acceptable use policy, which significantly softened the proscription against using their products for "military and warfare"; this change unlocked new revenue streams [112], connected OpenAI's large scale AI to Microsoft's existing US military partnerships [135], and later pushed AI to direct battlefield application via a partnership with the defense-tech company Anduril [85]. The public did not have a say in this determi-nation, nor, we assume, did the global stakeholders whose interests may not be safeguarded by the militaries that OpenAl chooses to provide services to. And yet, the concentrated private industry power over Al creates a small, and financially incentivized segment of AI decision makers. We should consider how such concentrated power with agency over centralized Al could shape society under more authoritarian conditions.

Currently reading an article about the impact of AI hype. There’s so much here, but the impact of AI investment on the balance of military investment and power is the most damning.

@cbsmornings.bsky.social Watched your video on AI in HigherEd and I'm pretty disappointed in the coverage specifically around AI detection. Lots wrong here.

Fantasy football stats this year: 10 leagues, 8 playoff berths, 6 championship games, 5 championships. Moneyed in 7 leagues

Over the past three years, I've played in 27 leagues, finals in 18 of those, won 12 of those, and moneyed in 20 total. #FantasyFootball Thanks #FantasyFootballers

As the semester starts, I'm blown away at the amount of time and resources that're being dumped into just POORLY preparing faculty for the way generative AI will impact their classroom.

#ChatGPT has roughly doubled my grading time. Curious if that's true for others
