"We should stop searching for “pure” origins in culture, especially ones belonging to such long, complex histories as the broader Chinese civilization." caroyim.substack.com/p/5-reasons-...

I hope someone draws this wonderful story about Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the power of the arts to help us see things differently, to the attention of our Education Secretary. Do read it, it will lift your spirits.

Can’t believe the whole country has to suffer through the return of Dickensian childhood diseases because the worst, most ignorant attention-demanders decided other people’s expertise makes them feel bad

That's the aftermath of the russian drone attack on the local market in Kharkiv. russia wages the war against kids in their beds, playgrounds, children's hospitals, now also against the toy shops. Here's what you stand for when you lobby for russia.

These: Es gibt keine Male Loneliness Epidemic. 💁🏻‍♀️

Sometimes it's better to think in terms of scene rather than word count, as in: sit down to write a scene and don't worry about hitting a specific word goal.

Many people think that if Ukrainians surrendered, we’d get peace.

No, we’d get much more wars.

If we didn’t defend our independence now, those of us who survive genocide under occupation would later be thrown into the meat grinder of russia’s imperial conquests against other sovereign states.

A circular manhole cover (although I suspect there is no hole under it) set in a piece of pavement. It has a star pattern, and poking through the holes are little bits of greenery, taking any opportunity they can.

Pareil.

Punkt.

On this day, three years ago in Mariupol—just days before the russians began turning a peaceful city of almost half a million residents into a massive cemetery.

Excerpt from a public letter Roald Dahl wrote encouraging people to vaccinate their children.

Olivia, my eldest daughter, caught measles when she was seven years old. As the illness took its usual course I can remember reading to her often in bed and not feeling particularly alarmed about it. Then one morning, when she was well on the road to recovery, I was sitting on her bed showing her how to fashion little animals out of coloured pipe-cleaners, and when it came to her turn to make one herself, I noticed that her fingers and her mind were not working together and she couldn’t do anything.

“Are you feeling all right?” I asked her.

“I feel all sleepy,” she said.

In an hour, she was unconscious. In twelve hours she was dead.

The measles had turned into a terrible thing called measles encephalitis and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her. That was twenty-four years ago in 1962, but even now, if a child with measles happens to develop the same deadly reaction from measles as Olivia did, there would still be nothing the doctors could do to help her.

On the other hand, there is today something that parents can do to make sure that this sort of tragedy does not happen to a child of theirs. They can insist that their child is immunized against measles. I was unable to do that for Olivia in 1962 because in those days a reliable measles vaccine had not been discovered. Today a good and safe vaccine is available to every family and all you have to do is to ask your doctor to administer it.

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

When I was a bookseller I was the science fiction and fantasy buyer for the shop and a customer told me all about this one day. I ordered all her available books immediately. I’m not doing a “I never liked him anyway” but I’ve been a bit “Is he though?” about Gaiman ever since.
