Gary An is the first physician-scientist we featured on @smbmathbiology.bsky.social #BiologyInNumbers. It was interesting to learn why he was doing research let alone in #MathBio. But he had some pretty good reasons for rationalizing why. Find links to the full episode here: smb.org/news/13614506

Too many people seem to accept the argument that while it is terrible for other countries to kill civilians in war, when their own country does it, it can be justified.
Explains much of the strategic and ethical disaster we are facing.

Number of people involved in NSF activities From 305,400 (FY25) -> 94,100 (proposed) https://nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/FY-2027-NSF-Budget-Request-to-Congress.pdf
The White House FY27 budget proposal is a clear indication that it seeks to diminish American leadership in science. As one telling example, the budget would drastically reduce the # of people involved in National Science Foundation activities by more than 200,000 (!!).

A 20% budget cut atop multiyear funding-induced cuts to research and direct terminations of projects underway will further degrade American leadership in science.
This is early news & not even a proposal or appropriations - precisely the reason to speak out now.

Excellent, if not recent, @nightsciencepod podcast with Akiko Iwasaki. I do appreciate the tension between letting smart people do whatever their instinct tells them to do with the idea of team science where a group of smart and diverse people work together to solve a hard problem […]
