This is such important news coverage! The "proving direct effect is tricky" part really resonates - that's the challenge the field needs to tackle systematically. The @pathos-project.bsky.social did crucial work mapping what we know and don't know.

Is ‘open science’ delivering benefits? Major study finds proof is sparse It’s hard to measure social and economic impacts of making papers and data free, researchers say

[1/3] Worth reading in @science.org: really important, comprehensive work on #OpenScience impact by the @pathos-project.bsky.social. Up next! @marind.bsky.social, natl OS coordinator "What if we called together IPCC for #openscience?" 🇫🇷 has pushed aggressively in #openscience national strategy, fund, guides, repos, etc. There has been success BUT, diversity of practices makes #openscience difficult to implement.

Thanks for accepting to talk at our event! when we (ESF and @orca-open.bsky.social) started organising the webinar in January we didn't imagine just how bad the threat on (open) science would get in the meantime. In the future it will be crucial to show evidence that open science is better science.

Great discussion! Interesting overview of the articulation of Open Science incentives between the European/ national/ funder/ insitutional/ library levels. I love the "Lorraine policy": instead of telling people to do Open Science, the policy is "If you want to do things, come to us, ask for help".

It really was a pleasure to present the "Lorraine model" together with @fresseng.fediscience.org.ap.brid.gy

Happy to share our experience of moving away from "big deals" and of funding instead jobs, diamond journals as well as open infrastructures!

Thanks again @aspaasper.bsky.social

AI deals underscore importance of open access (opinion) For those feeling queasy about academic publishers’ AI deals, Günter Waibel and Dave Hansen argue the way forward is not more restrictive licenses—it’s open access.

Good article on the consumption of scholarly articles by LLMs and how authors should think about this w/r/t open access. But it doesn't make the explicit point that CC BY NC ND (considered an OA license in most circles) could end up being a pitfall. 🧵
