The bay has weaponized indifference
Ooof yeah I feel this. Both the bay and lots of the south have different flavors of “nice but not kind” energy. The south has weaponized niceness down to a science and it can be ROUGH.
The one more thing gives them a conversation hook to pick up if they want or drop if they don’t. It’s hard to know what to do with “I’m great!” and might feel intrusive to ask. The one more thing is a low-stakes invitation
Had a friend ask how I can talk to strangers so easily. It’s actually easy:
1. Presume you’re already friends and adopt those vibes.
2. Say what you’re going to say, then say one more thing.
- How’s it going?
- Great! (1 more thing:) I just got a killer deal on this jacket I’ve been eyeing! etc.

Yessss it’s exactly these things! I really tried to make new friends in Oakland after tons of folks moved away during Covid, but it was excruciating and I felt intrusive. Now it’s hard NOT to get into conversations with strangers and it’s very validating that’s it’s just a thing with regional norms.
Lot to be said for third spaces and the shared expectation to socialize with strangers within them.

Just had a Friend Meet Cute with a woman who came into my home bar wearing a prom dress. Got to chatting about the museum event scene, piano bars, past traumas. Exchanged numbers. She’s excited to Introduce Me to The Girls. This never happened in SF and I missed it so much 😭
Making friends in Boston continues to be so much easier than it was in the Bay Area. Like it’s just so ridiculously easy here it’s bananas.
Also please don't make me kill wildlife in its natural environment as a starting enemy, especially if they're just vaguely framed as "a nuisance". If you're going to make me kill wolves and rats in the woods or whatever, please at least make them undead or something.
I talk about mine all the time: do not under any circumstance give me a limp, lifeless ponytail option in a character creator. I would rather not have the option of a ponytail at all if it can't be well-animated and floofy.
