At Cop28 it feels as if humanity’s shared lifeboat is sinking. There are only hours left to act | ... Leaders and activists must fight to the end in Dubai to stop vested interests sabotaging progress on fossil fuel phase-out and adaptation, says climate activist Vanessa Nakate

..."in the end, the climate crisis is not about pledges, statistics, reports or activists. It’s about human suffering and ruined lives. It’s about death."

Actors and academics criticise UK over climate ‘madness’ and limits on protest Letter says government pushing ahead with new fossil fuel projects while criminalising activists who raise alarm

"Rather than listening to reason or scientific fact, the UK government continues to hand out contracts for oil exploration in the name of false ‘energy security’ while steering the UK towards authoritarianism" 🧪⚒️

Ban private jets to address climate crisis, says Thomas Piketty | Climate crisis | The Guardian French economist says class inequality must be at centre of climate response and calls for progressive carbon taxes

"We have to put class and the studies of inequality between social classes right at the centre of our analyses of environmental challenges in general"

Your regular reminder that "Scaling CCS does not mean business-as-usual for the fossil fuel industry"

ETC will be releasing a pre-COP28 report on Fossil Fuels in Transition this week, but for now they published a blog post: www.energy-transitions.org/bitesize/car...

Climate scientists are working with indigenous tribes Native peoples have long collected environmental data. Now scientists are cataloguing these observations and learning how they're affecting indigenous communities globally.

"..the Anishinaabe people have been monitoring anthropogenic climate change long before it was a regular topic of public discussion"

Feel so privileged to work with students from a range of backgrounds, all with different ideas, different experiences, different hope and dreams. Every day, no matter what is happening in academia, it is the teaching that challenges, that satisfies, that lifts me up. #AcademicSky ⚒️🧪

Taking Geographers to a classic geology field location and having great conversations about rocks and what they tell us about paleoenvironments and landscape evolution makes me very happy 😍 🧪⚒️ Very positive way to end the week! #LoveGeoscience

When you go past your field site for the day on the train into work, and all looks beautiful and calm in the morning light... but you know full well that the weather forecast says it will rain cats and dogs on you and your coachload of geography students when you return later today 🤩🫣🤔😫

Thanks to the contributors to this piece, which was sparked by an interview with a professor who reflected that her role models had all been men.

Now, UK geosci undergrad recruitment is balanced between men & women- but these perspectives show we still have a long way to go 👩🏽‍🔬🧪⚒️ #AcademicSky

Government says council's four-day week should end - BBC News Councils pursuing a four-day working week are "on notice", says the government.

This is the kind of article that may get missed, but its very important. Council trials 4 day working week, with evidenced results of improved health, improved recruitment, improved retention, performance maintained or improved...

Of course, they are told to stop it.

Rich countries should stop pushing fossil fuels on Africa – don’t we deserve a renewable future ... Those who caused the climate crisis should help Africa harness its wind and sun, says Vanessa Nakate, a UN Unicef goodwill ambassador climate activist

🧪⚒️"When African people get to choose, we choose renewables. But will rich countries finally allow us to determine our own future? They need to meet us halfway instead of tying our hands behind our back with gas pipelines"

Mid Bedfordshire and Tamworth latest: Labour overturns majorities in by-election wins - BBC News Sir Keir Starmer hails victories in Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire, saying people "want change".

After a long period of being devastated by the news, and feeling completely helpless at the scale of political horror and turmoil around the world, this morning in the UK I woke up to a glimpse of hope... a glimpse of change... and many of us are so, so ready for it 🌟 www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk...

Children's loom

Children's loom

It seems excessive...But we bought a loom. And the loom is lovely. The 5 year old loomed a coaster that she is very proud of. Scarves are next to be loomed. It's chunky and they can't break it or themselves. (So far!)

When you listen back to a live interview in relief that you managed not to massively mess up... 🤣 promoting our undergraduate degree was exhilarating! Please sign this important letter. So many people are doing amazing work to make science equitable and accessible for all. The UK government's increasingly worrying rhetoric is very harmful, not just to marginalised groups in science, but to science & society more broadly 👇👇🧪⚒️

Letter to Secretary of State re EDI in science Online survey BOS
