It's quite simple really. Liberals see politics as a competition for rationality, when it's actually a completion of interests. They see their own views as 'common sense' because attaching it to material politics would mean they'd have to uncover their own class politics.
A lot of e.g. Dem Party activists, NGO/charity campaigners etc are habituated to a model of political action that prioritises messaging and awareness so they cling to the belief that their opponents are reasonable but ill-informed people who might be susceptible to their repertoire of tactics.
