Over the previous ten years Parton had successfully transitioned from Country signer to super celebrity; her albums sold over a million copies and won Grammys. Between 1981 and 1985, she had twelveTop-10 hits. Her films (and their theme-songs) such as 9-to-5 and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, were massive commercial hits. It is no secret that Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was fascinated by fame, especially when possessed by beautiful and intriguing women. Under what circumstances Dolly Parton entered Warhol's world is a story arguably too large for this platform, but in 1985 the two connected. Warhol, in his typical portrait-making approach, took a number of Polaroids of Dolly...and these images would become a small number of 42" by 42" silkscreen paintings realized the same year. It is worth mentioning that by the mid-eighties Warhol had completed a lot of celebrity portraits. His Dolly paintings are unquestionably an accomplishment within the genre. Instead of using discordant colors, Warhol chose a palette that was aligned with Dolly's aesthetic; pastel, gentle and a bit of ostentatious glamour.
