Datasets & Research — Safer Digital Intimacy

Generally, we found that nude images were treated no differently than other image and visual datasets.

Moving forward, we provide guiding questions for the short term, and pitch a longer-term vision for a new model of data governance.

More than half of the papers published example images, including 38 that published identifiable nude example images with faces shown.

Three papers made their created nude datasets fully public. We argue that these distribution practices constitute image-based sexual abuse.

Researchers also included abuse material:
* Content depicting sexual violence (from online forums that are now banned)
* Content from hidden cameras (including upskirt images)
* Potential content depicting minors

In the papers we reviewed, 8 million+ nude images were collected and used without consent. Of the almost two-thirds of papers that created their own datasets, many failed to mention a data source or stated only that they collected data from “the Internet”.

We conducted a systematic review of 150 CS publications that used nude images. We found that ethical norms in research are sparse, leading to a litany of problematic practices like distributing & publishing identifiable nude images & intentionally collecting abuse content.

We are systematically reviewing research papers in which researchers had access to nude images. We are still finalizing our analysis and also recognize that there are no great solutions or sufficient ethical guidelines right now.

Scraping nude images from social media platforms will result in collecting some that were nonconsensually created or uploaded. Scraping from adult content platforms (e.g., Pornhub, OnlyFans) is direct theft of labor and still constitutes IBSA.

While scraping data from the internet is common for other forms of ML research, the collection and distribution constitutes image-based sexual abuse, a category of technology-facilitated sexual violence that may lead to serious legal, mental health, employment, and reputation consequences.
