yeah probably worth trying to audit / read more about synthesis courses. much of the cool stuff these days is happening closer to biology (e.g. tricking bacteria into synthesizing what you want for you) or closer to material physics (e.g. surface chemistry)

these journeys can (and often do!) meet in the middle somewhere, but not always, and don’t have to!

which is really a long way of saying, I’d suggest very different pedagogical journeys if you a) wanted to know how to synthesize stuff or b) wanted to know mechanistically what the heck is going on
