if you're canto or toisan diaspora I beg you talk to your parents about this. ask them about it. it's your heritage and there will come a time in your old age where no one will speak to you the same way your parents and grandparents did.

it's a heated debate!! because schools and public institutions will ridicule and shame you for speaking your home dialect in outside of your family!!! did you know toisan people use written Chinese in a completely different way from standard mandarin and HK canto?

if you speak toisanese you will understand canto. if you only understand canto, you won't understand toisanese. no one wants to touch anything about the chinese languages with a 10ft stick because China has been trying to make mando the country's standard and stamp out other dialects

insane to me that some people still refer to toisanese as an "accent" of Cantonese. and it's always Chinese diaspora that say that. like, if you don't know your own culture don't go around saying stupid shit like that. it's a separate dialect, a one way door.
