Antarctic ice sheet folk, I'm looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Antarctic Ice Sheet Reconstruction [readvertised] for a 3.5yr appointment in Tasmania. Very flexible start date!

Join our new team, figuring out what is happening and what may happen in East Antarctica. 1/4

If you're interested in how ice sheets respond to climate, particularly over very long timescales, you might be interested in our new (open access) paper:

New model correction improves predictions of Antarctic ice shelf melt - ACEAS A new study led by ACEAS PhD researcher Claire Yung from ANU introduces a correction to ocean models that could significantly improve global sea-level rise predictions from Antarctic ice shelf melt.

🌏 Better models = better climate predictions.

A new paper led by ACEAS PhD researcher Claire Yung (ANU) shows how a refined equation used in ocean models can significantly improve the accuracy of Antarctic ice shelf melt predictions.

So proud of my PhD student Sienna who is working on the oceanography of Antarctica and is an excellent communicator- a great opportunity for her to reach new audiences and hopefully policy makers.

Basically, thinner surface layers are required to represent the Ekman-driven transport of freshwater off the continental shelf, which then allows salinity build up on the shelf by sea ice production

Antarctic Dense Water Formation Sensitivity to Ocean Surface Cell Thickness The ability of ocean models with depth coordinates to form Antarctic Dense Shelf Water (DSW) depends on their surface vertical resolution Deeper surface cells shift the direction of surface Ekman...

We figured out a cheap-ish way to make ocean models create Dense Shelf Waters (DSW) on the surface of the Antarctic continental shelf! How?
Fast answer: Ocean surface cells thinner than 1 m!
Long answer on the paper: dx.doi.org/10.1029/2024...

🚨 New paper alert 🚨

We developed the new PanAntarctic model and assessed the sensitivity of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) formation and export to horizontal model resolutions of 1/10°, 1/20° and 1/40°.
