If you've looked around our account, you may have found a comic covering how to purchase a firearm through an FFL. But, with a multitude of options to choose from, it's not always easy for someone newer to firearms to work out what should be considered as quality options for their given use case.
For those looking to make their first firearm purchase, we generally recommend to prioritize acquiring a concealed carry pistol first for every day self defense. After that, we generally recommend prioritzing the acquistion of either a rifle for home defense purposes, or a full-size duty pistol if a rifle cannot serve your needs. But this still begs the question of what brand or model to get?
As a first purchase for concealed carry, we point new shooters towards the Glock 19. The model is widely accessable, has proven itself as reliable over it's lifespan, has a wide array of aftermarket support for critical supplimental accessories (holsters, magazines and weapon mounted lights), and is easy for a new shooter to both get accustomed to and maintain.
For the new shooter looking for a rifle option, we recommend acquiring an AR-15. There is no shortage of brands that will work within a given budget, and the modularity of the platform allows users to upgrade as desired over time. We recommend a new shooter keep it simple, and go with a 16 inch, free-floating barrel option, with either a mid length or carbine length gas system, and either picatinny or m-lok rails. These configurations will help ensure support for accessories, such as a mounted light (vital for home defense - remember, one of the rules of firearm safety is being able to identify your target and what is beyond it), an optic, a sling, and offer a reliable shooting experience.
