This year's MEGA Grant project is Beach Spectres, which will take place on the weekend of 6-7 June, on the beach at Whitley Bay (near Newcastle). Information about the project, latest updates and how you can get involved is on the project website: beachspectres.com
Poster: Beach Spectres, we want to make the largest aperiodic tiling ever! What's an aperiodic tiling? It's when you cover a flat surface with copies of a shape like the one above, without any repeating patterns. The Spectre monotile was only discovered in 2023, and mathematicians are really excited about it! What are you doing? We're going to use large “cookie cutter” tools in the shape of the Spectre to cover the beach with the aperiodic tiling. You can help: come to the beach and we'll show you what to do. Where and when? Whitley Bay beach, 7th June 2026. Come and join in, just watch, or talk to some very enthusiastic mathematicians! beachspectres.com
I'm enormously happy to finally be able to announce the date of the #BeachSpectres project: 7th June, 2026. #WhitleyBay beach, UK.
If you can make it to the beach and join in with the tiling effort, I'll be very happy to see you and glad of the help!

Are you a mathematics researcher who has moved into or is thinking of moving into mathematics education research? Costas Loizou and I are running a workshop on 29 April at Leeds (it's also online!) on making the transition:

@mathforge.org has done what I’ve never been organised enough to do myself, and catalogued every #geometrypuzzle I’ve ever posted on social media. It looks amazing!

No wonder I didn't recognise you! I definitely remember the photo though.
I was there! Did we get to see the picture? If so which one?

Been away on leave and only 232 new emails since I've been away -- which doesn't seem much!
The compilation video for June's @tmip.bsky.social Animation Generation Collaboration Compilation is live! There were some lovely entries this month, and some techniques and software that are new to the collaboration. Thank you to everyone who took part! youtu.be/kri1aDjsgbo?... #MathsAnimationTMiP
I checked with STEM team. They have been physically displaced since Covid which has caused a difficulty in setting up a new loan process but they are revisiting this in the hope it can be reinstated.
Honestly, I'm rubbish at marketing.
I hate it. Putting stuff out there with the idea that people might not like it or want it, makes me feel all sick.
BUT I need to tell you about the open presentation workshops I'm doing in aug.

My guess is that we still do this. Ruth Holland and I have discussed updating the Leeds Maths outreach activities but I hadn't spotted that the Roadshow was out of date (it comes under STEM so isn't organised within Maths). The email at the bottom of the page is still in use so can be written to!

TMiP wouldn’t be possible without the kind support of @icms-edinburgh.bsky.social & the Isaac Newton Institute https://newton.ac.uk as well as the Heilbronn Institute https://heilbronn.ac.uk and our hosts @uni-of-warwick.bsky.social. Thanks to all of them for making it possible!
