Migration routes evolve fast. In 2025, detections of irregular border crossings at the EU’s external borders fell 26% to 178,000, the lowest since 2021. 🔀 Migration challenges cross borders. So does Frontex cooperation.
Frontex hosted a delegation from Bangladesh.
The focus was on combating smuggling and trafficking, with full respect for human rights and protection of vulnerable groups.
They also started planning the next phase of the programme, running 2027 to 2030.
10 years in, the aim is the same: border and asylum systems that work and respect rights.

Meeting in Montenegro, they picked four things to focus on:
• People arriving for different reasons
• Fair asylum systems
• Returns, and alternatives to detention
• Being ready for sudden rises in arrivals
The EU and six Western Balkan partners have agreed a new plan for working together on migration and asylum until 2030.
Portugal: 136 test flights across four counter-drone systems, with 64 drones stopped using electronic measures and physical interception.
Innovation in 2025: Frontex helped test and prove new tools for surveillance and situational awareness. Bulgaria: a multi-layered Tactical UAS pilot covered 8,000+ km² and generated 343 flight hours.
Day 2 of the workshop on Advancing EU Maritime Drone Capabilities organised by Frontex and Guardia Costiera showed how dialogue turns innovation into real-word impact.

Unmanned and remotely piloted systems are no longer a future concept – they are already shaping the way we operate in the maritime domain.
🧭 Eastern Mediterranean was the busiest route (30% of all entries)
🔻 Western African saw the steepest drop (-83%)
🔺 Western Mediterranean was the only major route to see an increase (+66%)

Irregular border crossings into the EU fell 39% in Q1 2026 to just over 21 400 📉, the continued downward trend driven in part by poor weather across the main routes 🌧️
Today’s workshop organised by Frontex and Guardia Costiera brings experts together to assess gaps and explore practical ways to better integrate these technologies into coast guard operations.

Frontex officers deployed in Bulgaria and Romania joined once again the national Border Police in humanitarian activities.

What happens at Europe's borders is shaped by events far beyond them. So, we work hard to strengthen cooperation with partners beyond the EU to improve situational awareness and operational response.

The next step will be the launch of European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) for pre-travel authorisation.
