It is legit funny but it doesn’t change the fact that if your mayor went on FB tonight, said that the Pope sucked, and then posted an AI painting of themselves as Jesus Christ performing miracles, they would be removed from office in less than 48 hours.

We really need to talk about the role of Fire Marshalls in holding cities back from safe streets and better housing. Believe me, my grandpa was a fireman - I am obsessed with fire safety. But a lot of this seems like aversion to change more than anything!

Every tire produces a chemical that kills coho salmon. Can Northwest scientists pump the brakes? What do you do when one of the most lethal substances to aquatic life emanates from every tire on the road?

Mounting evidence shows that 6PPD-quinone, a chemical produced by tires to protect rubber from degrading, is highly toxic to fish and other aquatic animals, even in microscopic doses.

call me a liberal nationalist but I feel proud to export an American culture of space exploration, multicultural immigrant cuisine, the Black American music tradition, football basketball baseball, NY Jewish comedy, land grant universities, and social libertarianism

Rule 1 of Ladds is “the freakier the better.” I think that’s a quad tall bike!?

Did you know the Mercury’s monthly issues are now delivered via electric cargo trikes?

Today, we rode along with B-Line from SE Portland to downtown see the delivery of the new transportation issue.

Much of oil and gas pollution is invisible without an optical gas imaging camera. This is how the industry gets away with claiming its methane emissions aren't a problem.

They are.

"We will convert all motorcycles into electric motorcycles. All cars, all trucks, all tractors must [also] be electric," he added.

Must be electric.

Can this also mislead planners when determining if pipes need to be scaled up for new multi-family housing? To me this shows that existing neighborhoods can handle 6 story, 24 unit infill apts without pipe expansion.

It really is wild how much of stuff you thought had to be based in some kind of rigorous, evidence-based process ends up being just vibes all the way down.

Forget EVs. Cycling is revolutionising transport Pedal power is booming, spinning up a new culture war

“In London cyclists now outnumber cars in the City by 2 to 1. Paris, where they now outnumber motorists across the whole city, is catching up with Europe’s traditional bike capitals, Amsterdam & Copenhagen…In Copenhagen, bikes account for almost half of commuter trips to work/school.” @economist.com

What this tells me is the same thing endless reams of data have always told us: if you want to stop community members from being killed by cars, you have to change the design of the road. We can do that - right now - with paint and bollards. Let's do that now, and make more permanent changes later.

These are your neighbors in the same building. You talk to them like adults if you have issues but generally no one can monopolize the space. It’s a shared den for all residents.

Ok, my read: upon passage the bureau has 90 days to propose an upzoning, they negotiate with Council and Council wants to pass something by June 2027. Still over a year away from an upzone, sadly. Time for the OR lege to further liberalize building codes though.

Is there a summary somewhere of the actual policy specifics today?

Council Avalos' post said 75 unit minimum! I'd love to see a maximized (under current building code, 16 units) single stair building qualify.

These are a great improvement but they really could use more utility. Needs to hold two grocery bags or a second small person, eg a kid.
