Bret Devereux presents before a slide depicting a zombie Roman soldier.
At the Society for Military History, @bretdevereaux.bsky.social wins the unofficial prize for the single best slide of the conference for this depiction of a zombie Roman soldier. 👍👍
Thrilled to be attending the Society for Military History meeting this weekend. Many good friends to see. Many great talks to hear.
There’s a LOT that’s wrong with what’s been put out.
I recently to spent a week walking Omaha Beach, shooting a documentary about D-Day. Humbling. Gratifying. Heartbreaking.
I’m open to seeing what the full publication presents as evidence, and I’ll be happy to be wrong if the facts dictate it … but what has been put forward so far doesn’t work on some VERY basic levels and is wildly out of touch with the state of the field.
Truly, I just love how he methodically, patiently, and even *generously* lays out the evidence here.
Model work for the historian. Kudos, @marcmorris.bsky.social 👍👍
For days I’ve been getting requests for comment about this theory. Like Marc, I’ve been putting them off until I see the details.
But I’ll say he does a *great* job laying out some of the most basic problems here.
(There are more, as Marc knows, but these already put holes below waterline.)

Pleased and grateful to see BLOODY CROWNS/200 YEARS WAR reviewed alongside Sumption’s final volume in the Wall Street Journal.

right. one of the best things I have read recently is @michaellivingston.com’s Bloody Crowns, where he argues that our concept of the 116 year span of the Hundred Years War is a 19thc invention and proposes a 200 year frame that makes the conflict make a LOT more sense to me.
I have no problem with this. :)
Historical Fiction is such delightful fun! Cleopatra and Company didn’t do any of the things I had them do in my Shards books … we think. :)
I’ve been accused of making too much of that impact — it’s how I start my book on Agincourt — but I really don’t think I am. Was very pleased when Dan used it for his biography.
I’ll ask around, but off the top of my head I don’t know of anyone who has gone further than that. My unpublished research has delved into some other aspects and ramifications of that moment, but not the question of who the men were. Sorry!
Bradmore’s own account says that the climactic moment was witnessed by “the diverse gentlemen and the servants of the prince.” Doesn’t tell us who those folks were, but it might be read as indicating that the king was NOT there.
An interesting question! Across the many days that Bradmore treated Prince Hal there would have been a great many comings and goings at the castle. But if you’re thinking of the moment of the arrowhead’s removal that’s a smaller cast of witnesses.
Out now, a wee article related to my new history of the Hundred Years War, outlining some of the ways it Europeans to the New World.

The Ark and the Empire, first book in the Shards trilogy (pub by @headofzeus.bsky.social), by @michaellivingston.com, is a great blend between history and myth; a pageturner that gives a fantastical spin over a key moment of Roman history.

Yesterday I was writing about Shiloh. This morning Omaha Beach. Right now, the Third Crusade.
All of it, strangely and concerningly, relevant.
It’s hard to promote anything with all that’s going on, but if you’re looking for an escape, my first novel was just re-released. It’s beautifiul and I’m very proud of it:
Julius Caesar is dead, assassinated on the senate floor, and the glory that is Rome has been torn in two...
