Personally I just slap it on and then scrub it off with a dry soft brush, which gives a really subtle dusty look. You can use varnish to fix it, but it does change the look of pigment and makes it a bit less subtle

This model is so cool, I had a lot of funntrying to render the greenish smoke as best I could. That's where he keeps his secrets.
