My talk on "depicting determinstic variables within DAGs" is now online. The talk explains how DAGs can be used to help with understanding & estimating causal effects involving derived variables (e.g. BMI) & compositional data (e.g. nutrition data).

The goal is to describe the world as it is. Descriptive epidemiology is not causal. It can be about hypotheses generation. Beautiful visualization doesn’t mean they are trustworthy. But people are more likely to believe it.

Dr. Platt highlighted the important of descriptive epidemiology in his commentary.
Why descriptive epidemiology is important.. it is not something that is easy or to be **ashamed of doing** as an easy approach. It answers a different and key questions.

Thank you Dr. Lauren McCullough for reminding us to remember the forest and beyond focusing on the trees.. To be rigorous but also allow ourselves and our work some tender care. As a field we have made great progress and continue to.

US customs agent asked what I study. I said Epidemiology.
He handed back my passport and started talking about his eye problems. 🤔🫤 I let him finish b4 responding, "I'm just a researcher, not a doctor/optometrist." His face dropped ☹️. Guess I won’t be curing any eye issues today!😂

The pandemic or addiction that is the single biggest existential threat to human civilization is not a disease or a drug. It's denial. Far too many are in denial of our polycrisis. And as a result, no action will be taken to solve our problems.
Yes this thought was inspired by that SciAm article.
