This looks absolutely wonderful. What civilizations still are, and still could be. @julespretty.bsky.social on storytelling for an imaginative tomorrow.

Since the birth of my girls, I’ve wanted a parallel life as a doula. But having watched a southern right whale birth from atop a cliff near my home, this doesn’t surprise me✨

Thank goodness for the wonderful Nandita Bajaj and her team at @popnbalance.bsky.social. And well done to writer and overshoot thinker @robertjensen.bsky.social for a great article, well worth reading and spreading.
Thank you @phoebebarnard.bsky.social for the thread 🧵 and Jensen's great article.
It's a pretty telling commentary on the state of our human 'civilizations' - especially the western one, such as it is.
Thanks @davidho.bsky.social for consistently good stuff on our future, ecological overshoot and what's needed to pull up and out of our messes.

There is no one more on point, starker, blunter, more darkly moving on the state of our planet and civilizations than George Tsakraklides. Please absorb his writing in your morning coffee ruminations. Well worth it.

What could be putting young women off marriage and childbearing? It really isn't so much of a mystery.

2. ...but now the estuary is badly encroached by thoughtless white folks' enterprises: boatyards, timber lots with creosote, RV sales & storage lots, rusting railway bridges & sidings, road infrastructure, (somewhat better) sewage treatment plants. My mental hindcasting visualizations are painful.
For example, the Snohomish Estuary (pictured above) was, until sometime in the late 19th/early 20th C, a significant hunting- fishing ground for the N'Quentlmamish and Sdodohobsh people, descendents of whom are now mostly enrolled in the (recognized) Tulalip Tribes. I close my eyes and see them. But

I often wish (especially since starting to make documentaries) that I'd managed, 12,000 years ago to place time-lapse cameras at strategic points around the globe. BBC has done some great imaginary but plausible visualizations. I love those. I can't cross an estuary without creating one in my mind.

Breakfast convo today: Oswald Moseley/Diana Mitford, the couple driving the short-lived rise of WW1-WW2 British fascism. The relationship with some suffragettes sheds light on why some women were initially drawn in despite fascism+pronatalism @popnbalance.bsky.social

And completely unacceptable too in the 21st (soon 19th) century USA, where it is about to mushroom phenomenally as the Trump administration forces literally millions into poverty through stripping food and healthcare supports. These are times none of us truly thought we'd see... until recently.
On psychology, status, a history of ideological poison, and conspicuous hyperconsumption even in townships. Our need for status signaling is pretty dramatic. Just like birds and other vertebrates, we guess. www.stableplanetalliance.org/post/izikhot...

It's hard to find 20-somethings or 50-somethings for that matter these days in the Global North who can repair socks, sweaters, toasters, or chairs. That's a problem for the times likely coming. If you haven't seen BuyNow! yet, prepare to be abundantly grossed out😧 www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVfZ...

Yep, that's exactly what we fear it is, too. For those of us who've worked on climate change for longer than many gamers have been alive, it's exasperating to see nihilism creep over humanity. It reflects badly on us scientists too, for not messaging v clearly about what's too late and what's not.
