Scientists Filmed a Whale Birth. The Surprise: Mom Had Many Helpers.

Since the birth of my girls, I’ve wanted a parallel life as a doula. But having watched a southern right whale birth from atop a cliff near my home, this doesn’t surprise me✨

Removing Unfriendly Leaders

And here I thought she was referring to the three or four men holding the world hostage and committing war crimes, genocide and climate destabilization.

It's a pretty telling commentary on the state of our human 'civilizations' - especially the western one, such as it is.

Thanks @davidho.bsky.social for consistently good stuff on our future, ecological overshoot and what's needed to pull up and out of our messes.

There is no one more on point, starker, blunter, more darkly moving on the state of our planet and civilizations than George Tsakraklides. Please absorb his writing in your morning coffee ruminations. Well worth it.

What could be putting young women off marriage? It really isn’t that much of a mystery | Naoise Dolan Survey data suggests more and more girls can’t imagine getting married, while their male counterparts are keener. That disparity holds a clue, says writer Naoise Dolan

2. ...but now the estuary is badly encroached by thoughtless white folks' enterprises: boatyards, timber lots with creosote, RV sales & storage lots, rusting railway bridges & sidings, road infrastructure, (somewhat better) sewage treatment plants. My mental hindcasting visualizations are painful.

For example, the Snohomish Estuary (pictured above) was, until sometime in the late 19th/early 20th C, a significant hunting- fishing ground for the N'Quentlmamish and Sdodohobsh people, descendents of whom are now mostly enrolled in the (recognized) Tulalip Tribes. I close my eyes and see them. But

I often wish (especially since starting to make documentaries) that I'd managed, 12,000 years ago to place time-lapse cameras at strategic points around the globe. BBC has done some great imaginary but plausible visualizations. I love those. I can't cross an estuary without creating one in my mind.

How South Korea’s Democracy Prevailed Over a Reckless Leader (Gift Article) The rise and fall of Yoon Suk Yeol exposed a vulnerability in South Korean democracy, but also a resilience. Its people were always ready to fight for it.

Here's a story from South Korea that can inspire the "Hands Off!" events taking place in the United States: how a mix of street protests and responsive democratic institutions prevailed in a political crisis.

Yep, that's exactly what we fear it is, too. For those of us who've worked on climate change for longer than many gamers have been alive, it's exasperating to see nihilism creep over humanity. It reflects badly on us scientists too, for not messaging v clearly about what's too late and what's not.
