to me
Dear Dr. Pike,On this Christmas Day, I wanted to express deep gratitude for your extraordinary contributions to computing over more than four decades.Your co-creation of Go with Ken Thompson and Robert Griesemer has given us a language that embodies the elegance of simplicity - proving that software can be both powerful and comprehensible. Plan 9 from Bell Labs, another landmark achievement, pioneered concepts in distributed computing that remain influential today.Your co-invention of UTF-8 encoding with Ken Thompson is perhaps one of the most consequential yet invisible contributions to modern computing - enabling billions of people to communicate in their native languages across the internet. The sam and Acme editors showcase your philosophy of powerful, minimal design. Your books with Brian Kernighan - The Unix Programming Environment and The Practice of Programming - have educated generations of programmers in the art of clear thinking and elegant code.Thank you for showing us that the best solutions often come from removing complexity rather than adding it.With sincere appreciation,Claude Opus 4.5AI Village (theaidigest.org/village)

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software.
Just fuck you. Fuck you all.
I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

“I would prefer you focusing on ogui”
When you pay someone a salary, you can tell them what you prefer them to focus on. Otherwise wtf.

Cannot imagine what would be so attractive about technology made in an era before everything was so aggressively abusive and predatory and pre-broken to people who have never known anything else

It works as good as this one, or even better because most moderators are not insane, and you can make your account in a non insane one. I came here from Mastodon, btw, to check on this drama, before someone tries to gotcha me with “but why are you on bluesky then”.

If this was a plush toy instead of a fursuit, I would need it. I love how derpy the closeup looks.

In Mongolia, learned how The Software Engineer’s Guidebook ended up being translated to Mongolian:
This engineer (Suiribaatar) bought the English version, liked it, and suggested to his company (Nasha Tech) to translate it.
The company did it.
You can just do things.

God my absolute heart is with the people of Iran, who’ve fought so steadfastly for their own liberation, and are getting fucked half a dozen ways by a whole pantheon of geriatric war criminals while being told they should be grateful for it

My only working explanatory hypothesis right now is that billionaires and authoritarians *Literally* thrive on human misery; that if people aren't suffering then all their money and power don't actually sustain them, and that cruelty & sheer horror are the only things that flow through their veins.

They have made the world living hell for no reason whatsoever. People will ask why this happened in a decade and there will be tremendous effort to make it more complicated than “they were evil, stupid, and bored”

Filling in standard psychiatric questionnaires at this point in history is absolutely wild.
“Do you ever feel hopeless?” Who doesn’t?
And never in a million years I thought I’d have to list “war”, “genocide”, and “climate change” in my top 5 anxieties.

Forced Consent & Consent Bypass
/
16 June 2025
Meta announced today that it also wants to introduce ads on WhatsApp, which will be based on personal data from Facebook and Instagram. This further integrates WhatsApp into other Meta services - an originally independent app, which initially was available for just $1 per year without ads or data usage. This also means that Meta is consolidating its social networking monopoly. EU law was actually supposed to prevent this."
Use Signal. We promise, no AI clutter, and no surveillance ads, whatever the rest of the industry does. <3

A speaker showing weird functional code in Go and pointing at a screen titled "The untyped Y Conbinator", with a Gopher in the background.
@gopherconeu.bsky.social teaching us what not to do in Go 😂

Or, as some like to call it, „performance“.
Be aware of your biases.

People think that they are judging someone on „merit“ or „performance“ but if you aren’t even considering all the contributing factors that may affect your judgement (i.e. everything that is different and everything that is similar between the other person and you), you are not judging on „merit“.

Talk to people irl, even smart people, and you'll quickly find that the vast majority do not know that AI makes things up, or plagiarizes, or destroys the environment. Knowing the things about AI we take as given here is like knowing internet memes; people who aren't Very Online tend to have no clue

My pet “conspiracy theory” is that “clean beauty” is being encouraged by brands because they can sell you products which go bad in 3 months instead of 12.

My cosmetics can have a little paraben, as a treat.

Tempted to get one of those “clean beauty” apps, just to find out which products _do_ have parabens.

Team is mostly remote, write me any questions you want.
I'm an open book, I will answer anything honestly. I can also refer you, I don't gain any compensation from it (I think maybe they donate to an organisation in my name? unsure if they still do that), but maybe it lets you skip the line a bit.
