And finally — and most importantly — thank you, @danielwiesner.bsky.social. You’ve stood by me through every high and low of this journey. I hope that when it’s your turn to defend, I can support you just as wholeheartedly as you’ve supported me 💜

Tackling (misleading) incivility online: a user-centric evaluation of different comment moderation strategies A recent study by communication scientist Andrea Wiesner at the University of Vienna investigates how Austrian internet users perceive and accept different strategies for moderating uncivil online comments.

🌐 Excited to see that my recent publication was featured on the @ipk-univie.bsky.social website!

✨ Two inspiring days at the #MEDemConference wrapped up with our #MEDemBoD meeting!

A big thank you to @gesis.org for hosting us in Cologne — and for the chance to meet one of the city’s most famous residents: Die Maus, star of the legendary German TV show "Die Sendung mit der Maus". 🐭🎉

TL;DR: Users want deletion for insults, dialogue for misinformation — and trust humans more than AI when it comes to moderating online content.

6 months ago 1 0 1 0

4/
Key insights:
🗑️ For insults → deletion was preferred
💬 For misinformation → interactive strategies (guideline reminders, counterspeech) were favored
👥 Human moderators were trusted more than AI
⚖️ Individual values matter: opposition to censorship + right-leaning identity = lower acceptance

3/
I ran a factorial survey experiment with Austrians tested the acceptance of moderation depending on:
- type of comment (insults vs. misinformation)
- source (human vs. AI)
- transparency (explanation vs. none)
- moderation strategy (deletion, warning labels, guideline reminders, counterspeech)

The paper asks: How should platforms moderate online comments — especially when they are insulting or misleading but still fall under free speech?

What kinds of content do users themselves want to see moderated on platforms? 👀
Surprisingly, it's less about the incivility of language and more about authorial intention, target vulnerability and platform affordances /w @solecheler.bsky.social, @pia-p.bsky.social & Svenja Schäfer 🙂 #ICA25 #PolComm
