There's nothing like a good crossover.

Am also looking forward to the remakes of The Doctor's Dilemma and Man and Superman.

This is about Keir Starmer and Peter Mandelson, but applies equally to pretty much any leadership position.

Except that the GOP looked at you-know-who in 2020 and 2024 and said "we like his style, let's have four more years."

The Machine Is Friendly. That's Why It Wins. How Australia kept its third places alive, what it hid inside them, why Britain’s fix made the problem worse, and what happened when I tried to beat the machine.

Very interesting post about the roles of gambling machines and online gambling in Australia and the UK.

Scientists Found Literal Ink From Ballpoint Pens in Martian Meteorites This doesn't devalue scientific research thus far, but we might need a more unified approach for cleaning important samples, the study says.

I suspect the Pope sounds "woke" to many Christian conservatives because the US is steeped in prosperity theology, where the point of worship is to deliver health and wealth to believers. Thus, "feed the hungry" and "show mercy for the poor" sounds needlessly political and "woke."

BBC Radio 3 - The Early Music Show, The Pied Piper The art and legacy of David Munrow.

Essential, essential listening. Great insight and reflection on someone who did so much for early music - and who possibly influenced a generation in a joyful yet serious approach to what music does. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

Thus, today's election is not really the end of an authoritarian regime. Rather, it is the first step in a much longer unwinding process.

It is massive and absolutely necessary first step — one that anyone who believes in democracy should celebrate. But it's more a beginning than an end.

Excellent nutshell.

It somehow made me think of James Agate—a very different character—finding his military métier as a purchaser of fodder for the BEF in the south of France.

People sneer at Trump and Vance, but look how quickly they have moved to negotiating with Iran the conditions for Iran's unconditional surrender.

This is your reminder to look out for the Weinstein Effect.

Which is when the extreme horrors committed by men become the new bar for immorality. Anything “less than a Weinstein” is now tolerated, even if everyone agrees a man was violent or exploitative.

Don’t let abuses of power become the norm.

So exhausting. Public so-called intellectuals who correctly critiqued liberal technocracy as at times paralysed by the complexity of problems or obsessed with creating even more complex solutions...

... and then convinced themselves the solution was amoral blowhards who reject complexity entirely.
