Is Re: Zero the author’s doomed attempt to redeem their own adolescence; doomed by its inability to conceptualize that instead of trying to torture the effigy until it achieves a more mature, integrated boyhood, the self-actualization they crave can be obtained readily through transition?

Like, even in a much more intimately connected and community-driven society; I would anticipate the same broad lifespan trends re: loneliness; even if the base rate fell.
Capitalism near-certainly drives loneliness more than smartphones; but even there it’s a lot that people tend to have more choice with whom they associate as they age, and form more stronger, lasting ties over time.
So loneliness decreases as you age; until like 70 where it starts to rise.
People report broadly similar rates of loneliness across gender categories; men are more likely to downplay theirs.
Young people are more lonely than old people; but that’s changes within a lifetime; and young people today do not seem to be any more lonely than young people used to be.
The ongoing male* loneliness epidemic** encapsulates so much of what’s wrong with our understanding of technology and society.
*few to no meaningful gender differences are observed in loneliness rates.
**cohort studies find no evidence loneliness is increasing over time
Like, okay, yeah, this is a nostalgia-porn year for the industry between Magic Knight Rayearth's remake, Ghost in the Shell getting a 'true to the original manga', Red River Story, Nanoha getting a new season, Liar Game getting an anime, Suikoden, Drops of God...
If only...
Okay, Houshin Engi is, at its core, a well-liked classic that mostly is just unknown in the anglosphere.
Psyren was a midlist shounen jump action series that got canceled.
Like, it was the shounen action that Jump readers who tricked themselves into thinking they had taste liked, but...
Every several years, a random shounen anime adaptation happens that feels *incredibly* laser targeted at my taste... as it was 20 years ago.
Houshin Engi was one. Now we're randomly getting a Psyren anime in 2026?
Like, cool, I guess, but why?!
Beautiful thread.

Screenshot from the manga Idolatry featuring a girl with her hands wrapped around another’s neck saying: “If I told you “I love you” and then proceed to kill you, would you smile and tell me that’s a wonderful reason too?”
More people need to be reading Idolatry.
It may be bait or not, but even if so there is some beautifully deranged lesbian energy in this one.

Wrath of the “oops, all cannibals” Righteous
Disgusting reporting by BBC using a tiny number of cases to suggest widespread abuse of a system which routinely denies LGBTQIA+ individuals asylum and forces them back into environments of persecution. This article massively distorts the reality of the situation. 1/

There’s a move I’ve coined the “Black Mirror Gambit” which works by presenting your company as the villain in a Black Mirror episode to soak up this mid-2020s-era investor demand for, well, evil plots. That’s the playbook.

Carve it on my Bones by Erin Elkin (forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/carv...)
Another from the author of A Little Vice, this one is quite a bit darker. A forcefem mecha story that asks how you define yourself when someone else can tell you who you are. Still finds room for humour, though.

A team of magical girls, a decade after they saved the world, have to get the gang back together. Only time, distance, and trauma have changed them all. An excellent story for Sailor Moon fans.
A bit over a year ago I was introduced to the thriving trans indie/self-publishing scene. What I didn't realize at the time is how this would lead to me finding a wonderful new community and really motivate me to work on my transition.
For #TDoV I thought I'd highlight some of my favourites:
Let's goooo. Only 8 minutes to go. Keep the integers going!
This is heinous. Querelle does great work, and the puritanical policies here come down extremely hard on queer creatives.
I haven't read the blahaj story yet, but it looks extremely cute!
Please consider giving it a look!
