The @washingtonpost.com describes the deaths of an estimated 750,000 people to date as "messy"

6 days ago 7003 1943 209 160

For years on my old blog I published the names of servicemembers who died in Iraq & Afghanistan. No other outlets were.

These are the first 4 Americans to die in the Iran War.
Capt. Cody A. Khork, 35
Sgt. 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens, 42
Sgt. 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, 39
Sgt. Declan J. Coady, 20

Decades worth of ebooks. Some converted from CHF. Some from Project Gutenberg. Some from Archive[.]org. Some from other sources.

But, Calibre has the single file conversion tool `ebook-convert`. I could just pipeline that and store failures as a retry with deeper analysis.

In what may be a weird problem, I have a library of a few tens of thousands mobi files, and I think I need to build a conversion pipeline to turn each one to ePub format.

Normally, I’d consider doing this with Calibre, but the volume of files to bulk convert makes that seem bad.

This local Wolfdog joined an Olympic ski event and triggered the finish-line camera. This is Nazgul. He snuck into a cross-country skiing sprint this morning and raced the homestretch with some competitors before being escorted home. 14/10 someone get him a medal

It just pops in my head every time there’s a button pushing analogy.

“Oh sure, you might get a benefit. But, to get it you must suffer.” Puritan ass thinking.

Some people will accept a ton of pain to keep others down.

You remember the Milgram experiment?

This is the person pushing the button getting a shock instead of “the subject.” But they’re assured the subject they can’t see is getting it worse.

Self destructive shit instead of helping their unseen neighbor.

I can’t believe RFKJr lied and mislead senators - about doing things he said he’d do when he campaigned for President.

Weird.

Wait, you mean he lied? Weird.

Just odd man.

I thought I had an 8am interview, grabbed a shirt, and across the front is “¡Adios Pantalones!”

No regrets on the shirt, but absolutely not appropriate for a call on Zoom.

Feb 13: Cowboys

One of the most iconic parts of US culture, and most Americans aren't even taught the origin of the word "cowboys."

I’ve been debating how much brain damage there is around due to Covid. But, it doesn’t explain a bunch of it.

The bad news: this is pretty normal.

Internally, a session cookie will end up mapped to a UUID internally. Sometimes this is to avoid sending bad info, sometimes to avoid sending the same ad too many times.

Sometimes to track engagement, to build a profile.

Feb 12: Shoplifting / Being bad customers

It seems like Black people shoplift a lot. Is that true? And completely unrelated, why are Black people so eager to adopt new technologies? Early adopters are usually rich, and y'all are not? What gives?

It takes some serious work to make Markdown parsing and rendering in to an exploitable vulnerability.

Kudos to @microsoft.com for the effort.

My favorite “corporate” hardware remains SGI. They were not just ahead of their time, but brilliantly engineered.

I love the preservation and upgrade efforts people are doing.

A closeup of cinnamon flowers!

My cinnamon tree has flowered! The flowers smell sweet and floral, not cinnamon-y at all. This makes sense as the cinnamon is a bug deterrent in the tree flesh. Flowers are a bug attractant! I’ve never seen this before. Growing plants is awesome.
