A still from the new Spider-Man trailer. It shows Bruce Banner (played by Mark Ruffalo) standing in front of a presentation slide on “Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD)”, although he’s standing in the way of most of it

Watched the new Spiderman trailer, why is *this* the moment I’m excited by? 😅

(No, not Bruce Banner, what’s behind him!)

The savings we're getting here by annihilating decades of American science will pay for whole minutes of the operation to create decades of death, immiseration, and chaos in Iran.

I think, just like the Gatwick Express (literally the *same speed* as Southern services along the same line, and no faster than Thameslink too), it's a stealth tourist tax!

And I think that context is the reason she got slated by liberals. She's in effect arguing for capitulation to imperialist expansion, bombing children, and ethnic cleansing.

But just like Eisenhower, the rest of her foreign policy is really grim. She doesn't actually oppose war & suffering, she just opposes us spending any money on defence. And she's fine with it when it's committed by countries like Russia (like when she condemned *NATO* after Russia invaded Ukraine)

I know so many immensely talented people who are just not going to get jobs in academia. The number of post-docs and job openings is so much lower than just a few years ago. The conditions are brutal.

Weirdest Disney On Ice show I’ve ever seen

When I say "senior" I just mean not early-career, so I don't think that explains it! I think they also don't realise how big the science community on Bluesky is already.

In the time I was active as a physicist on Twitter I did have some good discussions. Deleted my account soon after it became X.

Like I just checked and none of the senior academics I’ve worked with are on here, so at least in my field the discussion is just absent

I wonder if it’s because a lot of the big names are staying on X (in the mistaken belief that’s where the audience is) and only occasionally logging on here to promote a new paper?

Labour really think they have a divine right to every seat that doesn’t go Tory (or, in these days, Reform) lol

That’s utterly bizarre. Most journals I’ve seen say explicitly not to worry about style guidelines until the last moment, and just expect you to get the right general length and structure. I’m astonished they’d desk reject you for that!

I’m guessing an anti-proton, maybe? Otherwise it would be ‘negatron’ presumably

I mean that's true, there would be short term inflation but since those at the bottom would get a much bigger (proportional) boost from UBI than they'd lose to inflation, it'd be a net positive for them. And the benefit of having that permanent safety net to fall back on can't be overstated, either

It’s Christmas Eve, I’m on holiday in France, and somehow I’m getting emails from a journal chasing me up about whether I’m going to review a paper. They want me to reply within 3 days!

Even their own offices are closed right now, according to their website…

Are they actually trying to destroy British universities???

Oh sure, ecology does nothing to move society forwards, not like we’re in a nature crisis or anything! 🙄

Congratulations Dr Turner, it’s a huge accomplishment 🥳 (and who even are these weirdos?)

Solidarity with @uonucu.bsky.social members striking over the possible 200+ job cuts at the University of Nottingham, after 650 staff lost their jobs in the past two years.

I also share their deep concerns about new plans to suspend 48 courses, including nursing, modern languages, and music.

Thanks for the support!

I’m not the one making these petitions 😅

Did @uniofnottingham.bsky.social consult any students before announcing the proposed course closures? @uonucu.bsky.social

You know it's a pretty bad decision when the response from people is to create about 100 different petitions...

Sign every one. Let's fight this by all means necessary.

I trust the peer review process (which doesn’t just end when a paper is published, either)! Especially when it comes to a field with as many false alarms and as much hype as room-temperature superconductivity.
