This is very relevant to me - my Dad was a Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy in WW2 and did two years on Irish ships. My Mum was Irish, in the WAAF and did some training at Western Approaches in Liverpool before serving in Leighton Buzzard and Bletchley Park.

Thanks for the tip-off. I would have missed it otherwise. I think Bill needs his own programme. It was too short!

You forgot to say that you had it in the house in which he lived, and in whose garden the bees lived. Pretty unique experience!

Yes. It's hard to pick just one! I like Hans Hotter's versions. His lugubrious voice seems to add to the sadness.

Where Winterreise is moving in a profoundly sad way, the last movement of Schumann’s Fantasie in C is moving in a romantically passionate way. Both are heart-wrenching.

Are you looking for specific names, or lists of names or more general information. My Uncle employed a German and an Italian on his farm in Aberdeenshire.

I have a graffiti-removing tool kit in my garage. It’s not been used for a while so I’ll need to see if the solvents are still good. If so, you’re welcome to borrow it.

I also enjoyed this sunrise. Based on my knowledge of the local streets, it appears that you live around 200 metres South-East of me!
