Tracy Kidder passed away at age 80 on Tuesday... his 1981 book "The Soul of a New Machine" left a huge impression on me, perfectly capturing the highs, lows, and mindsets in a technology development program. I read it in high school and then early in my career - each landing differently.

Dave Grohl speaks for every single middle aged triathlete.
42 years ago... I would love to be confined to a closed library now on a Saturday morning.
Alas, no Papyrus 3. Perhaps Gosling will do it whenever his 5th SNL hosting occurs.
Several faces today at Saturday run club that I haven't seen since last year - this morning's temps in the 50-60s brought out the warm weather runners. I used to be like that, before I discovered 1) it is possible to run in Chicago all year and 2) it's easier to stay in shape than claw it back.
After hearing Gosling was hosting this week’s SNL, my first thought was whether there will be a “Papyrus 3”. www.enstarz.com/articles/244...
And then there were four... looks like whatever the Firefly announcement is, it will be made at the Washington DC Awesomecon. Grrr arrrgh... 11 days.
Kalshi/Polymarket should create an event on who is next... Staite or Baldwin would be amazing but expected. Tudyk (Wash), Hendricks (Saffron), Sheppard (Badger), or Ejiofor (the Operative) would be unexpected for different reasons and mind-blowing.
Fillion has been posting teaser clips on Instagram with former Firefly castmates... first Torres, then Baccarin, Maher, and today Glau. He's already said it isn't a build up to a con event, podcast, or crossover. It better not be a Funko doll or audio thing... need a new season or movie!
Had a good group long run but overdressed… wasn’t as windy as I was expecting. Most of group is getting close to peak mileage for spring marathons. I’m just tagging along.
TIL author Judy Blume owns a bookstore in Key West... how cool would that be to run? booksandbookskw.com
Most people buff and polish. You got polished in the buff.
At run club this morning, I received Girl Scout cookies ordered from a training partner’s daughter… now the challenge will be holding off opening them until my son comes back home from college.
Yes, I am actually Nethack era old... I played the original Rogue on early DEC Vaxstations and (when I was lucky) Sun SPARCstations, but Nethack was a more mature descendent.
Finished book #4 of 2026, @mattdinniman.bsky.social's "Dungeon Crawler Carl". I know... I'm late coming to this book, which was part of a large pile of sci-fi and fantasy novels gifted to me by a buddy for my b-day. It was a quick & enjoyable read -- felt like I was reading a book output by Nethack.
After a brief memorial, laz lit the cigarette at 6:00am. The 2026 Barkley Marathons has begun. #BM100
The conch was blown at 5:00am. The 2026 Barkley Marathons begins in one hour. #BM100
I was trying to stay around the $400 guidance. :)
Ha ha ha... tri gear marketers should do a better job positioning their products for Valentine's Day.
Has been a stellar running weekend... I used to hole up for the winter t I've since learned running can be great this time of year with the right clothing.
And finished book #3 of the year, “Maintenance: Of Everything” by @stewartbrand.bsky.social, which just came out this month. It didn’t disappoint and used an interesting format… similar to the experience of reading a book online with other readers’ commentary in the margins.
Finished book #2 of the year, Hummingbird Salamander by @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social. This was the first non-Southern Reach book I had read from him, and it was good.
Hit our low of -11F today at 8:30AM in the Chicago area… here’s hoping this is the lowest temp of the year.
Arrrrggh… pool is closed until Sunday due to “unforeseen circumstances”, and frigid weather is probably going to curtail outdoor running for the next few days. May have to drive some distance this weekend to reach another gym’s pool.
Finished reading my first book of 2026 — Labyrinth by @katemossewriter.bsky.social. Not sure how I missed this one when it came out in 2005… it won “Best Read of the Year” in the 2006 British Book Awards.
"Delightful" Derek was at last night's Bears-Packers playoff game! www.facebook.com/share/r/1bNb...
Hanging out at airport for a bit before the return home… been a long several days with lots of driving. Looking forward to returning to the work/workout grind
Last day of a working trip to the beach… deep cleaning a condo, wall mounting new TVs, repairing electrical outlets, etc. Thought I’d actually go down to see the Atlantic before leaving.
