One of the community projects born in the 32-Bit Cafe is GOOD INTERNET magazine, taking #writing submissions 'til March 15th!
This print & digital mag is about the #smallweb & #indieweb for hobbyists. If you like writing or #coding about #webdev or the #internet, here are the submission guidelines:
One of our members, @shannonkay.com, created a whole guide to making your very first website for her daughter. Turns out it can help all kinds of newbies with no experience get started in #webdev!
Check out Shannon's Make Your Own Website step-by-step tutorial on how to make your first site:
Turn your doomscrolling into bloomscrolling. Browse independent websites. Stop making billionaires richer by being addicted to their platforms.
Don't lose your voice by handing over the entire internet. You don't even have to know how to code. You just have to be willing to try.
One way you can #fightback is by taking back the web. Don't let yourself be silenced in a sea of bots, trolls, or stuck in a doomscrolling loop. Constant scrolling is an easy way to control you.
Create a website. Take your opinions there to widen your reach. Connect again w/the humanity of the web.
There's so much internet out there--there's more than just a few social media apps!
Checking out all the Neocities, Nekoweb, and Indieweb websites out there on Bluesky, and there's so many new ones!
Welcome to the fun side of the web, controlled by you!
Working on building my website. By which I mean looking at everyones really cool neocities and going wowwwww
One of our members, ajazz, created a whole interactive guide to escaping the corporate social media machine: Unplatform. This is a great way to get introduced to the indieweb & the small web, if you've ever heard of it but not sure where to go from here.
It's a fantastic read and full of resources.
You're welcome! Have fun!!!

It's human nature to be curious about how other people live, & it's one way to really get to know people that you don't have proximity to. Different opinions, lifestyles, music taste, aesthetic -- all of that can be shown through a personal website! You can really express yourself, your true self.
Are you asking from the perspective of the website owner or someone else who browses?
The website owner can use it for lots of things! A list: 32bit.cafe/cyowebsite/#0
As far as what someone gets out of browsing personal websites, the same could be said for following someone on social media!
For over a year, our community has been maintaining a MASSIVE resources list for everything related to having your own personal website. It's aimed at folks who are new to this with low-cost or free options.
It's a lot, but it's not meant to overwhelm you! It's meant to inspire things in you! <3
Make a personal website. It can be really simple! Do it for free at neocities.org! But have one of your very own that no one else controls. And start a newsletter. Make sure the service allows you to export and move your subscribers. Okay, now you have some independence and options.
Our New Year's event has officially concluded, and you can view all submissions here! We had 42 submissions for this year's event. Thank you for your efforts, energy, and submissions!
Our next event will be in February. You can stay updated by following our forum (w/RSS!): discourse.32bit.cafe.
People are still working on this! Communities like ours (32bit.cafe), Indieweb.org, disroot.org, neocities.org, nekoweb.org -- we're doing this & have been at it for *years*! It never went away, & it's re-surging in popularity since the pandemic.
It's just been made harder to find by algorithms.
For those of us looking to jump ship from Instagram and curate our social online experiences with nicer folks, we've got our own Pixelfed instance! It's 16+, and our posting rules are shared from across all 32-Bit Cafe spaces. (There's definitely a lot of pets!)
the site's homepage features a large photo of a black phoebe and the text "over 300 species recorded!" the other sections are recent photos, recent sightings (which includes species, date, and location info), and recent posts (which includes titles such as "herons of america" and "birds of snaefellsnes")

Oh my gosh, I love your color palette! This layout is so visually pleasing! :) Great job on it!
One of our members build a non-corporate layout builder here. You'd have to understand where things go within the code, but I think they do a pretty good job of laying it out! If you have any trouble, reach out to our community! We'd love to help.
Building websites is SUPER fun! It's like a puzzle and an art piece all in one.
If you ever need help, reach out to our community! We've got a bunch of different ways you can ask for help. We love to help folks get their website built!
Newbie alert! If you're getting started with HTML or CSS, having an already-made layout that you can customize is a great way to practice!
If you're getting set up for the first time on Neocities and not sure where to start with your personal website design, consider using 32-Bit Cafe member Varve's layout builder! This super-customizable, small web-made tool is an awesome one to have in your toolbox as you get started.
If you're at this stage: Just get on neocities.org and get started, even if you don't know jack shit about HTML. I promise it'll come to you over time; just write SOMETHING on a page and iterate from there. And browse others' sites! Some folks are doing wild things within the limitations there.
This is a great start! Keep it up!
Neocities has been around for over a decade now! There's over a million sites hosted there as of 2025!
The personal web (or indieweb if you prefer) has been coming back in a big way :)
Our community newsletter will be coming out tomorrow, which means today is a great day to sign up! Our newsletter collects popular posts around our community, showcases various projects and art our members are working on, and shares members' websites.
