Not a day for polar bear research. Waiting for weather on the shores of Hudson Bay. The nice thing about polar bear research is that we can only work on sunny days without drifting snow (or we can't follow their tracks).

One of my undergrads hand painted this beautiful thank you card for me, featuring her study species, European starlings and tree swallows. What a wonderful surprise! @mcmasteruniversity.bsky.social
Enjoying a crafternoon at Fairweathers with my lab following the seminar with painting and clay!
I was honored to share our research, including #citizenscience projects for the general public in the yearly nature&citizensci event, ignited by Otso Ovaskainen et al. Great questions from the audience! www.jyu.fi/fi/tapahtuma... @uniofjyvaskyla.bsky.social

Western Hudson Bay polar bears are in their usual spring hunting area. I'm in Churchill now waiting to start field research & deploy eartag satellite radios but no helicopter (stuck in Igloolik in a white out) & the weather here is snowy. Hoping for a helicopter & sun.

Easter fun 🐣🐇!
Just discussed this with another female junior PI... It's obvious but maybe more data helps. What is necessary, is that policies aimed at retaining parents in academia do not treat fathers and mothers equal. Early on, the impact is not equal and denying this ends up disproportionately hurting women.

Lots of Hudson Bay polar bears are towards the NW. Something good up there this year? Some bears are right along the shore lead - an area of open water & thin ice. There are more bearded seals & harbour seals in this area so possibly the attraction.
On March 8, 2026, I will be embracing the cold and joining the 2026 #CanGeoPolarPlunge at icy Lac Meech! Donations will go toward the programs of @cangeo.bsky.social and @rcgssgrc.bsky.social that support students, educators, explorers, & scientists! #BeBoldGoCold ❄️🥶
